2016.

It's thrilling. I'm on the edge of my seat 4 nights a week.

Said no one ever.

2001 was truely amazing.

2009 deserves a honourable mention though.

I really enjoyed 2009 and the first 2 months of 2010, because for the first time in years it finally felt like EE had some sort of stability back. There were a lot of great characters and storylines from the Santer era, but I think it peaked in 2009 and around the time of the 25th anniversary the following year.

2001 was just classic. Never a dull moment!

It's great to see 2010 getting some votes. A fantastic year for the show from start to finish and I have never understood the hate it gets on this forum.

Me too Ash. I think it was all downhill from that point.

Yes, that's probably the last great year in recent years.

2005. We had so many iconic characters and the storylines were gripping especially Den's death storyline. Chrissie Watts was the standout character and I loved her arc in '05.

2005's a funny one for me. It was a great year and 10x better than the tripe they serve up today, but at the same time most of that was only down to the Den storyline.

Bar his murder in February, the first half of that year was pretty bland, and the show was still suffering from its mid 00's slump. The second half of the year, when the Den storyline really started to take off and we had some nice little side stories too, and like you say so many iconic characters. It's just such a shame in the following year almost all of the big characters from 2005 left the show.

For me 2002 was the last great year. It was the year Steve Owen died, which I felt was a shame as he is for me one of the all-time greatest EE characters, and brilliantly cast with Martin Kemp. When Steve crashed and died, even then I thought to myself 'where does EastEnders go from here?' And the truth is... that was its peak. It has had its moments over the years since don't get me wrong. But it hasn't been consistently brilliant since 2002.

My two faves of all time are 95 and 98. Both excellent. I chose 98. Only hated how it ended.

I'm honestly shocked that 2009/2010 have rated higher than the likes of 2001!

It's a toss up between 2001 and 2005. 2001 because it was just one great storyline after another: Who shot Phil; Sharon's return; Mel's kidnapping; Kat and Zoe. 2005 because it had one EPIC storyline which involved virtually every classic character in the show, and Queen Chrissie Watts reigned supreme.

Nothing has come close to matching that quality since.

I loved 1996/97 where the grant/Tiffany /Lorraine stuff was going on.

I also loved the Steve Owen and Chrissie years.

2001 is my favourite year - Who shot Phil?, Kat/Zoe reveal and Little Mo/Trevor.

Eastenders can never have a great year again like 1999-2003,2005,2009. It too crap these day.
