Why have they given it that awful film look during the actual auditions. It looks awful. It may look ok on dramas but on this it looks terrible.

I thought that too. It would be far better as a proper studio broadcast.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I don't like it either.

It's like they've shot it with a film camera instead of the usual clearer studio look to it. It's hard to explain.

I think it's one of those things that if you don't know what I mean you won't notice it but when you do notice it my god you notice it. It sticks out like a saw thumb. Someone once described it as an invisible piece of tracing paper in front of the camera lens which makes it look like a cheap film rather than the clearer video or studio look.

You're right. It doesn't have the usual 'studio' feel. There is a technical term, can't remember it though.

I think it's called 'filmic'. They did it to Casualty a few years ago and have never changed back. How people can not notice it is beyond me.

I'm sick of the music constantly being played behind the whole episode. Granted it is a music comp but the old auditions were so much funnier and real when it was that awkward silence during and after an audition.

Don't they call it shot on video or shot on film. Shot on video is the type of filming for series like Eastenders. Programmes like Downton Abbey are shot on film. So X Factor looks shot on film instead of shot on video.

I'm no expert on this, but could this "film look" also have been achieved by applying some sort of colour grading or filters?

A saw thumb sounds even more painful than a sore one

I do know what the OP means though

I think they've done it to tie in with the audition vocals being processed and not being presented as they would actually sound if you were there in the room.

If they'd kept to 'video' then a processed or enhanced voice would really clash with that 'as clear as if you were there' picture. It's all part of the con trick being played on the public week after week by what is a total sham of a 'talent show'.

If you're still not sure about the differences then compare Will Young's audition in 2001 on Pop Idol to the stuff they now churn out.

I really don't like it at all, and its just another way of making the auditions sound better than they actually are.
