The new One Direction six years on
Zarla

Six years on from 1d's creation and with the band on an indefinite hiatus, Simon is going to be looking to form a boyband from the most successful and best looking young male singers. Watch him reject the ones who fit this criteria and then call them back in a dramatic pre-Bootcamp finale.

He really needs to do this actually, as there are no popular boy bands around at the moment in the UK, let alone one that could emulate 1d or JLS's success.

I don't know what will happen as the auditions progress, followed by Boot Camp, but I would think that Simon wouldn't need to form a boyband when Yes Lads are ready to go.

At the beginning of sat's ep when they were showing the acts being inspired by former winners it was The Brooks who were shown as this year's act trying to follow on "1D steps"

Musically I thought they were way ahead of them. The 1D X Factor auditions were mainly abysmal, except Liam who could sing but had the personality of a spoon so would never have cut it as a soloist. The selling point for 1D was personality as they put together five fairly different lads. The appallingly named "Yes Lad" might be musically a bit better but they all seem pretty much the same person and that may not appeal to the tween fans.

The appeal of 1d initially was in their extreme youth - three were only 16 and the eldest only 18. Harry went from a tearful teen to a madly charismatic hot property over the course of the series, from August-December.

Yes Lad came across as too finished and cocky, esp the Cian one.

Eh? I just watched all the Saturday auditions yesterday morning on YouTube and Yes Lad were basic af. None of them had exceptional voices and usually every boyband requires one very good singer to carry the band. Yes Lad was just 5 average voices that merged into each other. I.e. they could mime to each others parts and nobody would know the difference.

That said, I've actually liked the first weekend of auditions more than I expected. Certainly seemed better than this time last year even if the ratings are down.

Yes Lad will never sell. There is no solid market for a group like them - it's too mixed up. Young 'laddish' boys do not sell to the same market 1D appealed to (they want 'cute', even 'innocent', boys), whilst the vocals and song choices from Yes Lad isn't going to sell to the usual market of 'laddish' music. Essentially, because they do not fit into one box (but more overlap into lots of different boxes), they will never be a mainstream success.

I've watched all the groups up to the six chair challenge stage and there is one group that is far more likely to follow in 1D's path. I doubt that'll ever happen again but in terms of this series alone, there is only one group even worth considering in my opinion. Moving away from big groups and bands though, there is a duo this year that I think are going to be very successful.

There has to be a degree of exquisiteness about a boyband, with stand out good lookers like the young Robbie, the young Max George or Zayn and Harry. No-one in Yes Lad stood out. They all seemed a bit samey and no-one had a genuinely powerful voice like Liam Payne did even in his first audition.
