In context that happens all the time in this country with far worse repeat offenders getting away with it and worse long term fallout for the victims. The non belief of most of the offenders never seems to be such an issue.
People seem far more concerned with highlighting this issue to make some tenuous claim that atheists are discriminated against legally but happy to give blatant assertions that religion equals latent criminality a free pass. Based on very fuzzy evidence at that.
