Have you tasted different varieties of spam?

Interesting read, look how many variations there are

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(food)

Quote:
“As listed on the official Spam website, there are numerous different flavors of Spam products, including:

Spam Classic – original flavor
Spam Hot & Spicy – with Tabasco flavor
Jalapeño Spam
Spam with Black Pepper
Spam Low Sodium – "25% less sodium"
Spam Lite – "33% fewer calories, 25% less sodium, and 50% less fat" – made from pork shoulder meat, ham, and mechanically separated chicken
Spam Oven Roasted Turkey
Spam Hickory Smoked
Spam Spread – "if you're a spreader, not a slicer ... just like Spam Classic, but in a spreadable form"
Spam Bacon
Spam Cheese
Spam Garlic
Spam Teriyaki
Spam Chorizo
Spam Macadamia Nuts – Partnered with Hamakua Plantation
Spam Turkey
Spam Tocino
Spam Portuguese Sausage
In addition to the variety of flavors, Spam is sold in tins smaller than the twelve-ounce standard size. Spam Singles are also available, which are single sandwich-sized slices of Spam Classic or Lite, sealed in retort pouches.

Spam is especially popular in the state of Hawaii, where residents have the highest per capita consumption in the United States. Its perception there is very different from on the mainland.[19]

A popular native sushi dish in Hawaii is Spam musubi, where cooked Spam is placed atop rice and wrapped in a band of nori, a form of onigiri.[20] Varieties of Spam are found in Hawaii that are unavailable in other markets, including Honey Spam, Spam with Bacon, and Hot and Spicy Spam.[21]

Hawaiian Burger King restaurants began serving Spam in 2007 to compete with the local McDonald's chains.[10][22] In Hawaii, Spam is so popular that it is sometimes referred to as "The Hawaiian Steak".”

They all sound yuk.
I bought a can of spam a while ago for nostalgic purposes.
Used to have spam sandwiches as a kid. Can't remember if I liked it or not back then.
I certainly didn't like it this time around.

Bacon Spam is my favourite. Jalapeño and black pepper are okay, but not standouts. I've never been able to work myself up to trying the turkey, but I'm not a fan of pressed turkey lunchmeat, it's fresh or nothing. Low sodium anything is a travesty. The more exotic flavours like tocino are region specific and expensive to buy.

I've only had proper Spam

I've had other similar things like Sainsbury's tinned Ham and Pork.......which is basically Spam under a different name

I had a tin of Spam last week.........I sometimes just have a third of a tin for breakfast with mustard

But the killer way to eat Spam is to slice and fry it........fried Spam is fantastic !

I nearly always have a tin of Spam and a tin of Corned Beef in the fridge as emergency rations in case I can't be bothered going to the shops

Mmm.. Spam fritters! Don't think I've seen the other Spam varieties on sale in the UK. I did find some halal/kosher beef 'luncheon meat' but it was mostly MRP chicken & turkey with a bit of beef lung. Not nice.

Likewise.. and it's pretty much what they were invented for. Long-life meat! Also handy with tinned potatoes for making corned beef or Spam hash. I also like getting a baguette, microwaving a couple of eggs and making a Spam & egg sarnie. Nice with a bit of salt & pepper or mustard, and ready to eat in <5mins.

I've had the Spam Lite, which although tastes very much the same, goes a bit soft and mushy inside when fried.
The one with bacon, I couldn't taste any real difference to make it worth the extra few pence.

Has anyone ever grilled Spam? You wouldn't believe how much fat comes out of it.

I used to live on grilled (or fried) Spam sarnies when I was a student. I couldn't bear the thought of them now. It's amazing to think of the crap food I used to eat back then.

I was in Hawaii last summer and yes, they do love their Spam. About 3/4 down this page shows a typical shelf in the bigger shops.

Personally I'm not a fan of it myself, it's okay in a pinch for sandwiches. I think corned beef has a nicer flavour.

It's vastly improved by cooking.. Fry it so it gets a bit of crunch to it, or fold it into an old fashioned sweet and sour sauce with chunks of pineapple, bell pepper and onion, and it gets transformed.

My husband has made spam fritters a couple of times and I just don't care for the basic flavour of spam, cooked or not.
