Connect Technika 28E21B-HDR/DVD to laptop
Mad Hatter

I want to connect my Technika tv to my HP Pavilion Laptop so I can watch itv hub/bbc iplayer on the bigger tv screen, rather than on my laptop.

Please can you advise what the connection lead is I need to buy and where I can get one from at a reasonable price.

Many thanks in advance.

What is the exact model of the laptop, Pavilion is a wide range with various different models under it. If it is a fairly recent model it could have an HDMI socket on board which would require a simple HDMI lead.

The specs of the TV suggest it has a PC VGA socket so if your laptop only has VGA then a VGA lead will handle the video. You will also need a lead from the headphone socket of the laptop to whatever PC audio input the TV has (may be a 3.5mm jack or a pair of phono sockets) for the audio.

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry, the laptop is HP Pavilion dv6760ea.

From what I can see this model has both HDMI and VGA ports so simply use whichever you prefer. HDMI would be the simpler connection as that carries both video and audio over the same cable. VGA is video only so requires a separate audio lead in addition to the VGA lead.

Thank you, so I need a hmdi to hmdi cable? What sort of price should I be paying for one and can you give me a link for the best place to buy please.

(I have a couple of camera cables and video cables to link up to my laptop. But not sure if I have a hmdi to hmdi cable).

I have bought a load of Pro-Signal brand cables from CPC and found them very good value for money. They appear decently made and work well and importantly won't empty your bank account

For example a 3m lead

http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/ps...-3m/dp/AV14783

They do various lengths up to about 20m so should be able to find something to suit.

I tend to go for the leads with the grey and black plugs as shown in the first link, bit more expensive but they are the better made cables in my experience.

Of course if you have more pounds in your bank account than brain cells between your ears you could waste all that cash on something like an Audioquest cable (google them but sit down when you read the prices of their top of the range cables! )

Amazon basics ones seem OK - £4 for 3 ft or £5 for 6ft.

I've used a couple to replace some ebay cheapies which seemed to be causing problems.

Not got a lot of money in the bank so am happy to buy a reasonably priced cable.

When I plug in the cable, it wont all suddenly work will it? I have been looking online and I have to go into my Control Panel and start setting up different things to enable me to watch catch up tv.

Any very simple instructions please? Many thanks.

Plug one end of lead into a HDMI port on TV.
Select the HDMI input you have used on TV (won't see anything just yet)
Plug other end of lead into HDMI port on Laptop

And that is pretty much it.

You should now see the background image of your desktop on the TV. You can then drag any program screen off the edge of the laptop and it will appear on the TV. Presumably if using catch-up TV you are using a browser so just drag that over to the TV and do whatever you need to to access the service.

I have a HP laptop (different model range to yours) and both it and my previous HP laptop simply detected the telly as soon as it was plugged in and set the TV display as an extension of the laptop desktop. So no fiddling around in Control Panel required.

Got the lead and plugged it into the tv and laptop then selected the correct hmdi port on the tv source but nothing happened.

I gave up and thought I would watch catch up on my laptop and I got this message something like "couldnt detect plug-ins" and I couldnt get rid of it or view tv.

itvhub support tried to help but couldnt get rid of the message. I did a restore point to a previous time and everything went back to normal.

Any suggestions as to why the hmdi cable didnt work. Thanks in advance.

What version of Windows are you running as the instructions for what you need to check differ slightly.

For Windows 7

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/976064

Windows 8

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN129279

Windows 10

http://www.dell.com/support/Article/...1/SLN297870/EN

The last two links are by Dell but apply to any Windows computer.

The thing to check is that you have set Extend Display not Duplicate. In Extend the two screens (laptop and TV) can have completely different settings in Duplicate they have to be identical. So if Duplicate is set and the current settings for your laptop display are not supported by your TV then it is likely you'd see nowt on the telly.

If you select Extend then the laptop and TV should talk to each other and set the TV settings appropriately.
