Most overhyped villain as well, the way dtc was going on about him you would have never guessed he'd be running around a mansion playing hide & seek.

I agree it's a terrible casting. Waste of a good actress. Not only is she far too young looking as mother to the Bartons they are so hit and miss with her character. Clearly Emma character was envisioned as a nut job which only has a short shelf life in a soap. Got the chance of a good actress who seems happy in show so are now stretching it out so as not to drive character into corner.

The whole Kathy return / Gavin stuff has to be on the EE worst major storylines list. Making him Sharon father was just so wrong.

Hands down the worst was when The Young and the Restless decided to recast Malcolm Winters, the role that had made Shermar Moore famous with the guy that played Eddie Winslow on Family Matters.
Stunt casting is usually the worst in my opinion.
It can be pot luck for even trained actors to be successful in soaps, but it's when they randomly hire members of the public (that Emmerdale family), presenters (Bobby Davro) and singers that it makes a bit of a mockery out of the whole thing.
Okay not all actors will be professionally trained, but some experience is preferable to them randomly hiring anyone. Usually because of their looks rather than talent

Exactly, she had done television work before and not for years. In fact her main role was primarily casualty for one series twenty years ago.
She was far too theatrical for EE. Same with David Essex,

I'd put her and Norman Wisdom on a par - those few scenes - so painfully unfunny.
Sue Johnston - I still find it unbelievable just how bloody awful she was as Gloria. It should have fitted like a glove. Was it Michelle Collins - who I never warmed to either?? I think not as Gloria was a petty, greedy, lying, man stealing old hag. The best actress in the world couldn't make that likeable or believable

Ayesha in Doctors little sister (Sierra?) was a little white, blonde girl for months then they switched her and she was suddenly a little black girl! It was probably the most interesting part of the storyline! Probably not the worst casting ever, more just a strange recasting choice at the time.
