iPhone no sound

My dad's iPhone 5s has been having a problem recently where it won't make any sound whatsoever when someone calls. It doesn't even vibrate or make any sound when typing. Of course the first port of call where the obvious things like checking if it was on silent & if 'do not disturb' was on. But both didn't turn out to be the case. The weird thing is that the phone makes a sound when you go through the list of ringtones I tried updating the phone in case it was a software issue, but still no joy. Any idea guys?

I had something like that happen on my iPhone 6. Wasn't anything software related but the mute switch on the side of the phone had somehow been moved. Might be worth checking. Not sure where it is on a 5 but on the 6 it's on the left hand side (with the screen facing you) near the top. Tiny slide switch.

I had a similar issue recently when for some reason my 6sPlus was stuck in Headphones mode so no sound.
I found a solution that worked, how I don't know as it seems totally unrelated to the issue but it did so you could always give this a go.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Check: Mute button, 'Do not disturb' mode and timed settings.

If you have to, do a backup, erase and restore.
