From what I can remember of Lulu she seemed to complain a lot. She wasn't happy to get Brendan, firstly because of the height difference and then because he was a hard task master. She also complained about it being much harder work than she had expected. She definitely didn't get on with Brendan (nor he with her I suspect) and I seem to remember that a while after the show had finished that year she put the blame on her going out when she did pretty much all on Brendans shoulders. I had always liked her previously but thought she came over as a bit sulky and petulant. I have the impression Brendan does expect his celebs to work hard so he was a not a good partner for her in pretty much every way - the height difference being just one of them. That's just how I remember her now - from this distance after the show of course - but do remember at the time being disappointed in her and what appeared to be an attitude of expecting her 'status' to automatically give her a free ride to the final. I should explain that my memory is not clouded by being a Brendan fan - I have mixed feelings about him. I imagine he can be grumpy and difficult but he does want to get the best out of his partners and always seems proud of their efforts IF they have put the work in.

Thanks J.R.

In all of this, did she ever mention who she did want to be partnered with?

Oh, Terry! Your posts are always comedy gold!

All of this, plus the fact that they are always supposed to dance together after being voted out; you can always see the couples talking, probably thanking each other and being generally gracious, saying they'll miss each other, etc. But dear Lulu started dancing on her own completely blanking Brendan when he came close and making the whole thing beyond embarrassing and awkward. I'll never forget his face; "All these years on Strictly and this has never happened to me". He didn't know what to do or where to go, it was mortifying.

I seem to remember a backstage vid where she and Vincent said they wanted to be paired together. I think they would've been if the producers hadn't wanted to do the Holly/Artem/Kara thing, leaving Brendan with Holly and Artem with Edwina (as icky as that would've been ).

I think Ed Balls has scored a blinder getting on the show. Although he didn't rule out a return to politics in the interview I heard today, I reckon he's hoping that he'll cross over to mainstream TV as Michael Portillo did after losing an election.
I get the feeling that he's able to laugh at himself, so if he managed to make an impact he could end up with a new, more lucrative career.

Ed Balls taught at Harvard University and then was a journalist at the Financial Times before he went into politics.

Maybe he wants to go back into 'serious' journalism, but on TV instead of newspapers?

Or perhaps he's doing it because he liked doing Bake Off
He seems to have a good sense of humour.

ETA nosilauk - we think the same .
Though suspect as Strictly has had 2 Conservative exMPs and a Liberal MP, the PTB needed a Labour one to be balanced.
One from the SNP next series??

I liked Lulu back in her very early days as a young pop singer with a strong voice, but not afterwards - she seemed to lose her sense of humour over the years.

On Strictly she seemed to think she was still as popular as she was in the 1960s and 1970s and couldn't understand why she wasn't. She didn't come across very well - and seemed ungracious when she went out.

I don't think a celebrity has to actually win Strictly to benefit.

Having a pleasant TV personality, a willingness to try hard, getting on well with people and coming across as 'genuine' all seem to boost people's careers.

It also depends on what sort of career they want.

Lets not forget as well that she was - as per one of the best DS threads evvahhh - Let Down By The BBC And Scotland because everyone in Scotland was out celebrating Bonfire Night and so missed the window of voting opportunity.

All of them but imo it's the young gymnast girl Claudia .Gymnastics is an extremely demanding, brutal sport where elite gymnasts don't stand to earn much after the Olympics if they don't get actively out there. Not only that but they have a VERY LIMITED shell life in their sports; after 20 years old, you are considered " old" . Gymnasts have 2 choice after the Olympics : end their elite career ( most of them do unfortunately and continue with college gymnastics ) or explore new adventures for 1 or 2 year then get ready for what would most likely be their last Olympic ( 2020) if they're remotely as good as they were or healthy.

Anyways, for all these reasons it's Claudia imo. There isn't too much opportunity for gymnasts to earn as much as someone in tennis, football. ...for example. ...so the more they hustle, put their name out there the better.

After seeing her on the Red Carpet show come across as quite warm and pleasant, I reckon Daisy Lowe might come out of the show with a few more people thinking "Aahh- she's a nice girl" where previously they'd never heard of her. Not a ringing endorsement I know, but with some fancy work from her agent it could be used as some sort of springboard. If not- kindly feelings from the general public is never wasted is it?

I was on the forums back then and I can remember very well that everyone hated her before the launch show. Didn't understand why at the time, but when the show started, I got it. She was very annoying!

I feel that Will is certainly in it to raise his profile. I follow all the celebs on twitter, and whilst most of them are talking excitedly about strictly, Will is just promoting his music at every opportunity. It'll be interesting to see how he comes across on the show.

I can understand people forming an opinion DURING the show but not before it started. Does Lulu have a reputation for being generally diva-ish/difficult?

That kind of blatant, self-serving attitude won't get him very far...

To be fair to Will, he's only just finished an extensive summer tour culminating with four gigs over the bank holiday weekend. Add to that, he's just released a jazz covers ep last Friday, it's hardly s uprising that he's still got his music head on. I'm sure he'll be tweeting his excitement with Strictly along with the rest of them when the competition starts for real.

Please don't give me any more reasons than I have to dislike him...

Good point Marguerite. Also just read that he's incredibly nervous, so maybe he's just trying to block it out till it is actually happening. I really want to like him, I actually voted for him on pop idol!

No idea. I'm knocking on a bit, but any negative press regarding Lulu over the years obviously passed me by! I was so confused about the whole thing at the time.

I wonder if this is a part of the 'deal' for creative types nowadays. Social media makes it possible/likely for creative types to embrace the PR/marketing role more so than previously. I know several people who have been asked/told by media platforms to ensure that they use electronic sources to promote products/events and therefore increase the likelihood of 'sales'.

They split up.

Matt is going out with an actress who was in Downton Abbey.

Daisy was recently with Darius (the Pop idol guy)

I agree that Danny Mac possibly stands to gain the most. If he dances well - and I believe he will - he will stay in long enough to make an impression, and I think he is a possible winner. He was very popular when he was in Hollyoaks, and he's young, male, and good-looking. I don't fancy him myself but I can see why others do. He seems to have a fairly affable personality, as far as I know. He has worked in musical theatre and I believe is what is known as a triple threat (acts, sings, and dances). SCD can't do him any harm, and very likely will do him a lot of good.
