thats exactly what i thought. how can anyone watch other peoples misery like that? its sickening.
can we not have a system where a benefit claimant has their rent paid from source rather than trusting the claimant to pay rent rather than updating their mobile or buying a curved tv ? |

its opened my eyes, it's a mirror on a anti-social strata of society who have little respect for themselves, or others.

We did have rent being paid direct to the landlord before the coalition government changed it and paid rent direct to tenants another coalition gaffe IMO. |

Rent used to be paid to the landlord but Universal Credit is changing that, and people on benefits are being paid monthly rather than fortnightly, so they'll have even more money to NOT pay to the landlord (which is what the Tories want). |

I felt sorry for the daughter kicked out by the fathers partner, after he died
Wonder what the story was behind that? |

shouldnt people, even benefits claimants, have some responsibility in their lives? handing over the rent personally, instead of it being blindly sorted by someone else can help people to think about their lives and their income. yes, some will fail but it seems to work ok for most doesnt it?
It was just way easier to pay the money straight to the landlord. No its got to go into one account and then paid into another. Hypocritical of the government who believe in being efficient. |

The idea of encouraging people to manage their money better by giving them all the benefits is a good one in principle but does not help some people aprticualt=rly those with multiple debts. |

It's got nothing to do with responsibility.

The idea had everything to do with encouraging financial responsibility and in principle was a good one, It's not uncommon for people to say that they don't receive housing benefit because it's paid direct to their landlord and they have forgotten they ever claimed it. Paying housing benefit to the claimant works fine for some people but unfortunately not for everybody. |

just watched the "Big Family" special edition of "Can't Pay". Have to say that the response from the Harringey emergency housing team was awful. Making the evicted mother go to Tottenham Police Station so that the police could verify the warrant was ridiculous.

I wonder if there are any female high court enforcers? I was thinking a woman might be able to defuse a situation better than the rather large, menacing gentlemen we see in this show! Also the police might be more ready to make an appearance if they were called. Often they've just not shown up when they've been contacted.

I know a business who had a high court debt officer come around. The business had no idea of the debt. Once they were informed of it, they paid it off direct to the company they owed. They then discovered out that now that they've paid of the debt, they didn't have to pay the high court fees. Apparently, the guy come around a few times to attemp to collect his fees and attempted to sieze goods, the business owners said no and the guy gave up after a few times.

But I imagine what likely happens is that they'll turn up somewhere and tell the camera crew to hang back then they'll tell the debtor they're being followed by a camera crew for television and ask them if they consent to being filmed. Maybe the gopro footage is essentially 'owned' by the company who then licence it to C5? |

Reminds me of the story of the man who saw someone breaking into his shed one night, called police to be told no one available to attend. Rings police back couple of minutes later and tells them not to bother attending as he's got his shotgun out and sorted it himself. Within minutes, police are there. |
