The police can take ages to turn up as there are frequently none available (after all, it's not an emergency) and they don't get priority (and rightly so) any more than a member of the he public who calls a non emergency.

Reminds me of the story of the man who saw someone breaking into his shed one night, called police to be told no one available to attend. Rings police back couple of minutes later and tells them not to bother attending as he's got his shotgun out and sorted it himself.

Within minutes, police are there.
Depends whether they call 999 or not I guess.

Pretty sure seizing items needed for work is illegal. The debtor should have let them take the van then sue the DCA ha.

He is but when you're faced with people like this everyday you need to be firm and put the pressure on.

He could tone his attitude down a bit though.

Anyone who actively chooses a career as a debt collector, bailiff or 'enforcement agent' is basically a scumbag imho - arrogant gloating thugs who enjoy their work far far too much for my liking. I don't know how they sleep at night?

I know its pretty much just scare tactics but if someone cannot pay and goods are actually removed, how can they justify charging 'storage' fees?!?

I like it when they start panicking like mad when they get separated or locked in somewhere, claiming they're being kidnapped ha.

I understand he needs to be firm but the way he speaks down to some people when he knows he's got the law on his side can be sickening. There's no need for it. The way he uses the word "sir" when speaking to people makes me want to throttle him!!

I sort of known what you mean, but "how they sleep at night" is probably by thinking of those who are owed money rightfully getting it back.

Hmm, I suspect they care little for them as long as their wages are paid? (They've chosen a job where they get to confront people who are in a weak position. Not nice...)

Not nice.

But someone has to do it.

There is that? (But personally I'd rather scrub toilets!)

No, they are not really scumbags, although some of their tactics are a little scummy, but they are dealing with people who have avoided paying their debts for a long time, and the people they owe the money to have had to take the matter to the highest court in the land to get an order that enables them to get their money/property back by bailiff, who need to be aggressive as the people try to weasel out of their commitments once again.

Indeed, you could ask "how do you sleep at night" to the people who owe £11k in unpaid rent, where do they get off in not paying rent and then acting all offended because someone comes knocking asking for the money? or to kick them out of the house they are not paying rent for? They are equally entitled to the label "scumbag" if we're throwing round insults.

But I did feel for the guy who acted as a guarantor for his mate's rent, to be let down by your mate so badly must really sting. You could alter that old proverb "Neither a lender nor a borrower be..." to include "and absolutely no way ever sign up as a guarantor"

I totally buy all that. But at some point in their training, there will come a day where it's explained to them that they will be coming across people with their backs to the wall, in desperate straits for all sorts of reasons? It's the ones who hear that who get a warm feeling of satisfaction (and oneupmanship?) creeping up their spines that would worry me - the 'I wuz only following orders' types (and we've seen some on this programme!). I'll be honest though - I did like the black guy. He displayed a level of respect and cordiality that others were sadly lacking in.

Yes, but it seems to be only when they apply that bit of pressure can they see a difference between those that won't pay because they are trying it on and those that can't pay because they are genuinely up against it. If they back down and leave at the first "I got no money man" then they may as well not turn up at all, if they are going to go back to the court and say that this order can not be fulfilled because there are no assets to collect then they need to be sure they've not had the wool pulled over their eyes.

Why do people keep letting bailiffs into their homes for? never let them in.
There are some circumstances bailiffs can for entry such as re-possesion, magistrates etc to name a couple but most cases bailiffs can not force entry into residential properties, more people need to be aware of this.

BIB i felt bad for him too, i would never ask anyone to be a guarantor you never know when you'll hit hard times.

It's the people who use their children as emotional blackmail (Mr Smith in the bungalow) that infuriate me. 'You're upsetting the kids'. So take the kids elsewhere. They are nothing to do with the matter. Do they think the bailiffs will write off the debt cos they've got children?!

Also, in the matter of evictions, how can people be so naive as to think they can live somewhere rent free? When I rented I always made sure rent was a priority.

I once had to take someone to the small claims court (I won!) - I knew perfectly well they had the money, they just didn't want to give it to me...

Yep they can't FORCE their way in but can enter and stay inside if you let them in or there's an open door.

I don't get all the dislike for the enforcers on here..

The people they visit all owe money, admittedly some are in a bad position and I do feel for them but when I see renters who haven't paid rent for ages or people who haven't paid suppliers and so on I get angry, I make it a matter of personal pride to always pay my bills, sometimes I have had to go without to get it done but I have always done it, all the enforcers do is make others do thesame

Exactly this. What you don't see is the aggravation of the people that the money is owed to. It has taken usually far too long to get it through the courts, then the high court, then the baliffs, all at considerable cost. If someone owed me money and just wouldn't pay I'd be more than glad to have big bad Stuart go round and collect it for me !

It's more the over the top fees the enforcers add which can more than double the debt that i dislike, i have dealt with bailiffs in the past as have made mistakes but the ones i dealt with were great and helped me as much as they could to get the debt cleared off and that was end of the matter.
I suspect a lot on this show is played up for the cameras both by the bailiffs and debtors.

Why are some people against the bailiffs? Some of the money owed is quite substantial. Imagine you were owed thousands and it takes a long time to get to the point where a HCEO enforces the writ. Would you still be saying the HCEOs are scum bags?

The real scumbags are the ones that owe thousands to others and don't even make an attempt to pay a penny despite numerous letters about court cases and judgements etc. If there was no way to enforce these judgments people would just not bother paying any debts off and then what kind of society would that be?
