I felt sorry for the people in those flats who overlooked that horror garage. What a view! And I thought Stoke Newington was meant to be an up and coming area. It's been and gone IMHO!

And why did that strange mechanic man keep giggling?
Yes, what an eyesore. I think he was giggling because he knew they had no cash to pay up and the bailiffs could not refuse the sensible offer of allowing her to come and collect the car at anytime.

But - who would roll up to a garage like that and think "yes, this looks like a competent outfit to leave £7k car with" - no it looks like the sort of place that would strip down your engine and then loose all the parts in a pile of scrap metal, "the pistons are in there somewhere" what an idiot the car owner was.

And talking of idiots, what sort of idiot rents a house to someone with no job and then accepts someone who has no money and only works part time as a guarantor in the first place? Seems like a good way to flush your money down the pan to me.

Normally I tend to side with the people owed the money, but last night on both of those I really do think they walked right into it, the fools.

I thought that the son showed a bit more of a sense of responsibility than his mother or aunt, the mother who for some reason thought that the council should pay the debt .

Although if you have to wonder how he could come up with so much money a month when he did not work himself.
exactly, our thoughts too.

They may well pay the debt off but in the meantime, what about the weekly rent they should pay too? they have no chance
As the woman said, if she wins the lottery, she will leave this country. She is happy to be income supported (using her expression) in the mean time. Gosh, that annoyed me.

Me too, and her assumption that the Council would pay their debt. Speaks volumes about how our Benefits system is viewed.

Couldn't have been much of a garage not to have any assets (tools/parts/equipment). Farms and garages usually have the richest pickings for seizure.

And what a dump !!!!!! I wouldn't let them near my lawnmower let alone my car !!!!!
What a complete dive that mechanics place looked like. Just getting a car inside that place would probably scratch it to buggery.
They even blocked the road. No access at all. I wonder why!

The thing that got me was that the Guarantee lady's sister ( the one who racked up the debt in the first place) just sat there saying nothing, not really getting upset while her sister was in bits.

I would be mortified if I had got my sister into that mess.

From what was said, I don't think she even realised that she was acting as guarantor.

And the car in question was valued at £7k. You would have to be mad to take it there.
If she didn't realise then she is either very stupid or very naive.

No way was that car worth £7k. The £7k was probably mostly court and bailiff costs.

If that car was worth £7K, I'm Lady Gaga!

I don't understand why landlords rent to the kind of people you mention without steady work or income. Maybe they are from the same country of origin and feel sorry for them. Then they pay the price. That woman had no idea that being a guarantor meant stumping up if the renter couldn't pay. And then to think the council would fork out!

A few years back a friend asked if my husband would be guarantor for her to rent a room in a house. I had to say no because although she had and has a steady job you have no idea what will happen in the future and I couldn't put him in that position. Felt rotten doing it but had to.

Very wise - those Amigo Loans ads make me sigh with despair.

The cynic in me recons the housing money that should have been spent on the rent, was probably sent over to Somalia to help other family members come here.

You'd have that that she be a bit more responsible to the country and taxpayers who gave her refuge and now feed clothe and look after her and her children.

Indicative of the sense of entitlement of some people I'm afraid.

And that, in a nutshell, is why so many want to come here - by any means possible.

What I can't understand is why the govt. changed the payment system - rent used to be paid direct to the landlord, I believe, and then it changed to be paid to the tenant. Why was this done? Did they hope to encourage some kind of responsibility in the tenants? We've seen how well that works out!

I would think any money sent to Somalia doesn't stand much chance of actually reaching its intended recipient. That is even if Somalia has a working postal system which I doubt. Maybe they use Western Union or some such, one of those payment systems we're always being told to be wary of when buying online!

That's why it was changed. It works for some people and not for others. It is still possible to have housing benefit paid direct to the landlord in some circumstances.

I believe it changed because the landlords were taking advantage and charging more rent when they knew that it was coming from the benefits office and sometimes there was even some collusion between Landlord & Tenant to cheat the benefits system. The rent can be paid straight to the Landlord and some insist on it, but it is up to the tenant, unfortunately, once that money is in the hands of the tenant, they don't always want to hand it over.

Ah I see, thanks Daisy, I hadn't thought of that. Shows how naive I can be! God there's no end to people's deviousness is there?

The unemployment rate for Somalians in the UK is nearly 60% for men and 80% for Women. And people from Somalia are one of the highest percentages of migrants coming to the UK from Africa.

We cannot house them all.
