Gunge inside K600i case

My eldest is starting secondary next week and we were looking at a cheap phone for him for emergencies. Looked at all the Nokia 130 etc. types but really want 3G as I have a 3 sim with plenty of credit on it and texts and calls will be far cheaper.

He dug out my old Sony K600i from the drawer which must have been in there several years and amazingly it fired up. It would be perfect for him but when you take the back off, there is all this dark gunk in the casing. It's sticky and I immediately assumed it was the battery but it appears to be more around the camera. The battery looks clean and obviously still works well.

Anyone had anything similar. It would be the perfect little phone for him and it seems a shame to bin it. Don't really want to spend £50 on something he might lose or get nicked but also don't fancy VO2 PAYG fees if he starts texting a lot.

Bit of a mystery that one - I too would have thought the battery and binned it sharpish.

I can't think of anything else that would produce gunk like you describe...

Have you investigated the rest of the drawer for any external factors?

Shame you need a 3G phone - I've got a tiny little Samsung in the drawer that must only weight about 50g that you could have had for nothing, but it's only 2G. It makes me wistful for a time when smaller and lighter was better!

It's not external I don't think. It's inside the casing and nothing at all outside. But the battery is clean. It appears to be from the camera!

Sounds similar to this thread:

I guess not knowing what it is, it's better to bin the thing. Shame as it was a good little phone in it's time and it's held charge for maybe 4 years!

It could be some form of insulation or glue used in the manufacture that has liquified with age. Can't you remove the back and use a solvent to clean it?

It's not that little cushion that is on the back of the battery lid that stops the battery from rattling about is it?

If it is it's turned to gunge now! I think the battery is OK and a genuine one is £35 so I'm loathe to bin the phone. Might try solvent as D123 says and see if it returns. Been in a clean drawer for a few year with old chargers and cables etc. Nothing else has gunge on it so I'm sure it's from inside the phone.
