What's gotten into you cool mate. You always spoke highly of my friend Phelan, and now you're beating him like a pinata. What happened to turn you so bitter. Do I have to take a trip over there to sort things out?

Who should be the leading lady in that case?

Sarah, Bethany....Platt overload. Sinead, Erica and Mary work better as supporting cast.

Michelle and Liz are laboured characters. Fiz, no thanks!

Leanne for me is the ideal choice, but they've got it all wrong with the baby's father storyline. Maria the best of a bad bunch....dreary, but a character in dire need of some direction.

Seriously? Of course not. If we read into every script I imagine we could have found 100's of 'offensive' comments over the years worth cancelling over if this is the criteria! Even on a bad day Corrie is better than 90% of the trash on the TV.

Can't argue with you because I haven't been watching it since 1960, only since around the late 70s/80s. I didn't like the Des Barnes stuff but a lot did. The new (last few years) characters have been fairly rubbish too.
I didn't like Elsie Tanner either. Did you?

What racism scandal?

The scandal is a few professional offence takers, who have nothing better to do with there time, are actually taken seriously by anyone.

That might be true, but is it really worth shouting about a bad Corrie being better than something that is even worse?

Are there any recent viewing figures? It might be getting a slating on here (I believe well deserved) but bums on seats is probably all the makers are interested in.

Exactly. It should be Leanne. I never said anything about her being a bad character just that the story she's got ATM is utter crap and I think Jane Danson deserves better as she's a great actress. She's on par with Paula Lane, both are great actresses!

Why am I getting so much hate for having an OPINION that Maria is no good getting dramatic stories?! I don't dislike the character, I think she's good in everyday scenes but not as a leading character

Lot of ppl on here find her boring, but as soon as I say I think she's boring everyone jumps at me like a Rottweiler, what the hell is that all about?!

And now ppl are mocking me for having a different opinion? Don't you got anything better to do? Grow the hell up!

The vast majority of this forum find her boring, the only reason I'm on my own with this is cos I'm not in any forum clique, and tbh I wouldn't wanna be!

My posts are wearing thin just cos you can't accept I have a different opinion to you? Really tho?

Can I do ANYTHING right on here FFS?!

I get shit on for loving Kylie (which still happens) and now I get shit on for finding Maria boring, and what, am expected to just sit back and let ppl take the piss out of me who don't even know who I am?

All I'm known for on here is being mocked for loving Kylie, how sad is that? Nearly every user on here has made a jibe about my love of the character, and it's actually getting pathetic!

Sometimes I don't even know why I bothered joining this forum tbh. Someone told me it was good but I dunno anymore! I think it's just addictive

Notdebbiedingle are you obsessed with Maria? (No offence I'm just asking)

It does amuse me when someone doesn't like a character on a soap they automatically get calls of "she can't act". Also funny how its almost always women who get accused of not being able to act, male actors rarely get accused of being unable to act, Hmm funny that!!

I see it all the time on here. It's laughable, clearly they can act, or they wouldn't have got past the audition stage, in the first place!

Axe Corrie? How ridiculous, however a chainsaw to some of the writers and production team may be beneficial!

The book took its name from the many generations of Arthur Hailey ( try he author's s) family tree, several of whom but not all were slaves, and from their shared ancestor Kunta Kinte - the memory of ' the man who called a river a ko' was passed down. The title did not refer to slavery. The expression was like others have said, a play on words - there was no racism intended. Eva is too young to have seen the TV series and I'm doubting she has read the book. Where's s the series ending scandal in that?

Just been looking through a few articles about it & came up with this guy trying to explain why it was offensive:

https://inews.co.uk/essentials/cultu...eet-offensive/

I would like if I may to quote the following:

"Having a white character say 'I have more roots than Kunta Kinte' is somewhat insensitive to the history of oppression and the fact he was a slave. The white person was always seen as the slave owner!!"

Well I'm sorry but in this day and age I find that comment, or the inference behind it a hundred times more offensive than a perfectly innocent play on words!!
I am not about to squeal & complain about it, as it in itself was not purposely written to be offensive any more than the Corrie quip was but it does prove two things to me!

a) You can see racism in anything if you look for it
b) We are supposed to accept that racism is a one way highway & anyone complaining of 'reverse racism' would I have no doubt be laughed off the planet!!”

I've always thought the MOBOs could be seen as racist - there would be a riot if we suddenly had Music of White Origin awards.....

I talked to my mom about the comment last night and she said she was offended by it, and couldn't believe that they had that line in the show. Now I wasn't really offended by it but I think we all have different things that we find offensive and we should be respectful of others feelings. Honestly someone at Corrie should have thought twice before allowing that line to hit the airwaves.

Thanks. The 'offence' stems from ignorance. Often happens.

It did come across as tactless, but enough to cause a scandal? If anything people do say tactless, non-pc things a lot. I can see why people are annoyed - I get irritated at the regular ' jokes' made about Scots in the media - but I think it is also important to keep it in some context.

I bet the writer's s regretting their ' clever' attempt to reference pop culture

I started watching it the same time as you. I enjoyed the Des Barnes stuff and even fancied him! i didn't like Elsie Tanner either, I loved Annie Walker though

Well Corrie is very popular show so I can see it causing a scandal. We had something similar happen here in Cleveland, a one of the new anchors on our Fox station was reporting on the Grammy's or VMA's and said Lady Gaga's performance sounded like Jigga Boo music which is a racist term from years ago. She caught hell for that and was taken off air for a week and had to issue an apology.

Haha!! I'm going to let the obsessed comment go clean over my head as it's so ironic it's laughable!!
Firstly I think if you look back through your many posts/threads about Kylie you will find me in agreenent with you in most cases!! She was a great character played by a wonderful actress & she is, and will be missed on the show!!
My reply to your post & the reason why I'm finding your posts wearing very thin is your frankly ludicrous claims that the show is falling apart because your new favourite character has 'disappeared' for all of a week (a character who at best is Marmite to most of us at the moment) and that a character who has had next to no action for the last three years is the show's 'new leading lady' simply on the evidence that she's actually got a decent storyline for once!!
I accept you don't find her acting great, I do, so there is no way I wasn't going to pull you up on that, I'm sorry if you can't take criticism of your opinion but again that is part of debating on a forum!!
I have no wish to fall out with you on this as, like I say until recently I have always found your posts entertaining & amusing (meant in the nicest possible way as someone who gets a bit of gentle piss taking for being the forums biggest Maria fan sometimes too) but as I say if you are going to come up with such ludicrous statements you can't expect people not to react strongly!!
Finally regarding cliques, I gurantee you as a Maria Connor fan you are always going to be outside of the forum cliques so I don't think that one applies to me either!!

That sounds much more directly racist and shocking though. There's s nothing derogatory about the word Roots or the reference to the TV series or book is there? It was an odd reference, given how long ago the series aired ( although Eva claimed to have grown up with it) and it did give me pause for thought, but tbh I could imagine it being the sort of thing people WOULD say. I hear or read offensive remarks about Scots all the time in the media. It's s annoying but you don't call for the entire programme to be banned.
