Why no Scottish Gaelic soap?

Ireland has a long-running Irish Gaelic soap called Ros na Run, and S4C an even longer-running Welsh one in Pobol y Cwm. So I wonder why there is no Scottish Gaelic one? I can appreciate the complexties of it - apparently only 60'000 Scots speak Gaelic, and probably only a few thousand watch BBC Alba. And there may not be that many actors who can speak Gaelic either. But still, culturally it seems like something is missing there. Any thoughts?

There used to be one on STV back in the 90's. Think it was set in a college. Can't remember what it was called.

Just Googled it. It was called Machair.

There was a long running Gaelic soap in the 90s - Machair (created by the author Peter May). It is still repeated on BBC Alba.

There has been a few Gaelic drama as well over the years.

Gaelic media is a pretty big business. Well not big in the grand scheme of things but there is a lot going on. Lots of small production companies etc

They have the drama series Bannan on now in Scottish Gaelic. Culturally speaking I don't think its necessary that a soap is produced. There can be other ways to promote the language.

Yeah. Would be nice to see a modern Gaelic soap opera. It would probably do better on STV but as far as I know, STV don't show any Gaelic output, and then they'd need to consult with ITV about the timeslots etc. and possibly take some ITV shows off air to accomodate it. That didn't go down to well a few years back lol.

But Pobol y Cwm is made on the cheap. It's well written, acted and of a good standard. It's made by the BBC, shame BBC Scotland can't do similar.

Of course, but Pobol is the jewel in the S4C crown. Apart from sport etc. a soap opera has mass appeal and draws people to the channel. I doubt STV could accomodate a third soap opera, but the ratings for BBC Alba are too low to sustain a soap, realisitcally.

BBC Alba sometimes repeats Machair which was produced for a few years in the 90s.
