Yeah, despite the impressive shot stats, only 9 were on target and an even smaller percentage really challenged their keeper.

Maybe that's part of our problem, we pass the ball back and forth across midfield umpteen times then shoot as soon as we get any sight of goal. We really need to be penetrating the opposition's defence more and creating real goal scoring opportunities, rather than hit and hope jobs
So basically we are the team equivalent of Andros Townsend

That's why we're building such a big stadium .. we need ball nets in Row Z to catch all the shots we blaze over the bar

Mauricio on @HKane: "He has injured his ankle ligaments. We will continue to assess him every day but don't want to put a timeframe on it."
https://twitter.com/i/web/status/778199908436287488

Why not ?

This is bloody ridiculous. Why not just say how long he's going to be out and be done with it ?. Unless they're being vague to somehow protect him from the media and the speculation about the severity of the injury and whether or not he'll be able to start scoring again when he's back ?

Ok, reading in to it a bit more, apparently Poch has indicated that due to the ankle swelling up so much, it's not actually possible to properly assess the extent of the damage so they can't pinpoint how long he'll be out, even if they wanted to.

It appears that they're going to wait until the swelling goes down and try to assess again.

I'd say bare minimum he's out for the next two weeks at least.

Yes, his goals ratio was 1 in 30 shots so that was us on Sunday!

If you watch replays of some of those attempts you can't help but notice that often it's simply poor technique, poor first touch and poor balance...

...Does Poch even give the team shooting practice? Not sure we are seeing any evidence of it.
I get the feeling that Poch has given the instuction to the players to shoot on sight but in their hurriedness to get a shot off, placement goes out of the window. If only we were a bit more clinical, a shot has to test the opposition keeper at the very least.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 17-year-old attacking midfield prodigy Marcus Edwards reminds Mauricio Pochettino of a young Lionel Messi and the manager is considering whether to give him a first-team debut at home against Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Pochettino has named Edwards in his matchday squad and the expectation is he will begin among the substitutes. There has long been a buzz about the diminutive left-footer with the low centre of gravity, whose favourite position is No 10 and whose greatest asset is his ability to glide past opponents, and Pochettino only added to it with his comments on Tuesday. “His qualities … it’s only looks – his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi,” the manager said.
Some tag of expectation to hang onto a youngster!

It's a shame Poch said that. I'm sure Edwards has been earmarked for the first cup game for quite a while - he's been showing so much in the development matches that he couldn't be knocking on the door any harder.

Still, it's a step up so easy does it ..

On the issue of Sunderland - it's a 10-man defence, organised by Moyes, set up to blag one point. For those who like a punt, in his heyday at Everton Moyes was as close to a banker away from home as you could get in particular circs.

What I believe happens in these games is you get so little time, getting a shot off is half the battle, then you feed off scraps like deflections to a corner, deflections into the 6-yard mixer and deflections into the net

You just don't get many clean shots in these matches. You also end up 25-30 yards out and hoping for a deflection from there. You also can't *unlock* so easily because the opposition is so well drilled and so packed - and so aware - of how you in particular will crate space.

30 shots with, was it 9, on target? Par for the course I'd say with a Moyes team.

They absolutely frustrate the boll**ks off you ..

Wimmer makes his first start which is good. We need to temper our expectations about Janssen to a degree i think. We need him to start scoring regularly more than anything so if he can only get one tonight then that's fine, as long as he can do it again at the weekend.

Anyway, here's hoping we can go through.

Blimey, I think that's a bit of risky team. Gillingham will have a go.

Or it could be another 30 shots, 9 on target and one goal at this rate.

Janssen misses the target with a free header from 6 yards.

janssen does play out wide a lot - should be more central
