if you're a massive fan who buys all the artists albums then yeh they are pretty pointless. But if you are a casual fan who likes a lot of their hits but wouldn't necessary shell out and buy their albums, then you would perhaps buy their greatest hits, Like last Christmas, I asked for Anastacia - Ultimate Collection because I like her and most of her hits but not a big enough fan to buy every album she releases if that makes sense. i'd be the same with Rihanna, I think I own one of her albums but if she brought out a Greatest Hits album, i'd definitely get it and like people on here have shown, she definitely has more than enough to warrant releasing a Greatest Hits album. Also, for artists like Madonna whos been around for over 30 years and Cher whos been around for 50 years, not even their avid fans are gunna own every single album of theirs. if you think, Cher's career started in the 1960s when all her albums were released on big massive vinyl records that most people wont be able to play anymore. So, a new greatest hits from her would be suitable. I'm surprised she hasn't released one last year or this year with it being her 50th anniversary
That said, in certain situations you are right that they are completely pointless and it's the label that pushes them. I remember P!nk saying in interviews when she released hers in 2010 that her label wanted her to release one for the past 5 years and she managed to persuade them not to by releasing I'm Not Dead and Funhouse quite close together and tour in between them. Then in 2010 it was her 10th anniversary and they said to her they were going to release it with or without her participation [same thing was said to Spice Girls and Steps which led to their reunions] and so she gave in and they made a deal with her that they'd give her time to go in the recording studio to record a few new songs for it as she said she didn't want to release an album without any new music for the fans
I suppose Greatest Hits albums are more for casual fans rather than hardcore fans. I think after 10 years they serve a purpose then should be rereleased after every 3 or 4 albums
