He is a proper judge on the TV show - it isn't an act as they are real cases settled by him.
Not quite - he is a legal professional (barrister) who offers a binding arbitration service, albeit one that just happens to be filmed as the basis for a TV programme.

I had never heard of Judge Rinder, or Robert Rinder, but after seeing his general demeanour on the intro show, I am really looking forward to watching him, he seems like a lot of fun.
I'd only heard of him becuase he was Benedict Cumberbatch's best man...I wonder if Bendy will show up?

He might well do, they seem to be quite good friends.

Oh]

Also.. referring to him just as 'Star of Judge Rinder' does downplay a ton of what he's actually achieved in his career. I like him and I hope he goes far..
I get your point but if it was down to "what he's actually achieved in his career" he wouldn't be within 200 miles of Strictly.

So, while I think they should drop the "Judge" Christian name thing, I think they are left with very little choice than to refer to him as "Star of Judge Rinder". This was one of my main objections (no pun intended) to his selection for the show. He may well be known for his legal skills but that's not what got him the gig. What got him the gig is being on ITV Daytime as "the Star of Judge Rinder"...and that is about the size of it.

To put it in James Jordan's words #FACT!

What if, for instance, he legally changed his surname to 'Judge' - would they call him Judge Judge?

Yes, he's a barrister. I don't know how the TV regulations in this country work as regards his show but I don't imagine his "findings" are legally binding as they claim they are on Judge Judy - I would guess that cash awards are paid by the production team rather than the defendants.

But that's off topic and isn't the point, the point is that no Strictly contestant has "officially" been given a nickname in the competition before, and I just think it's a wrong way to go...
Yep that's how it works and why people go on it.

I always call him Rob.
I call him something else that rhymes with that

To me, go with what's he's best known as, and that is Judge Rinder. It's easy recognition.

I look at it as if say we had Twiggy on the show, she'd be known as Twiggy, not Lesley Hornby. She still calls herself Lesley, she's said that before, I've seen her say that, but she's known to us as Twiggy.

Go with what's best known is what I say.
So they should all be renamed . We should have Model Lowe, Gymnast Fragapane, Politician Balls, Singer Young etc, etc .

It is just daft to be calling him Judge .

Interesting to find out he is actually an high powered barrister. He must be wanting to go into something different if he is now into reality TV.
He can be called Judge if he wants, and is anyone on here complaining about it absolutely sure he hasn't changed his name to Judge by deed poll?
I knew someone who did that to be known as Fungus the bogeyman. It was legally his name as mad as it was.

And now you're just being stupid. I really don't get why this whole calling him Judge Rinder is an issue? It's one of the biggest non-issues I've seen on here.

And, I think going by the couple interview videos, how he's listed as Judge Rinder and Oksana, shows how Strictly is going to refer to him.

Judge Rinder is for the best. Simple.

I will treat users like Paace with respect if they aren't flippant about such things. Clearly they're point was a silly one. Why on earth would you start calling the rest of the same if Judge Rinder is referred to as Judge Rinder? That is stupid.

It was a silly point of Paace's to make and I'm not the sort to stand for that I'm afraid. That kind of thing does annoy me.

I don't mind having fun, I'll point that out, but I can't stand people being unneccesarily facetious for the sake of it. It's always been a bugbear of mine.

The announcer called him Robert at the very beginning. I'd say he's there as himself not as a TV persona, but whatever he prefers.

All this has made me see the error of my ways, and I shall be messaging the Mods to change my user name to Lady Agatha Worplesdon henceforthwithwhich.

I feel that the story behind the above name change must be far more interesting than this discussion of Judge/Robert Rinder's name, but I won't ask!

Suffice to say it involved some magic mushrooms a bet and a choice between that or a tattoo of said bogeyman in a rather prominent place.

Interesting enough now he too is working as a judge, a JP, a dispeputable youth sets you up for all sorts of things😀
