Anelise didn't oversing imo. She sang that song perfectly and didn't seem like she was shouting or straining.

I've actually never heard his version, but on the ballads I have heard him sing I find them a bit dull so I don't hold out much hope with him on a Bob Marley cover.

Stevie Wonder dull? I'm a bit lost for words.

Actually, it is not that uncommon to be able to perform various styles convincingly, if you have the voice to do that.Experience, versatility, and luck of the vocal chord draw is all it takes.
I can and know more than a few others who can. Most of the backing vocalists on the show could. The performers, not so much, though several have been pretty great at it.

its one of the excuses thats usually thrown out to defend a posters favourite that they cant be expected to sing something outside of their comfort zone, and whilst i agree they will always be better when they stay within their comfort zone, having to sing another genre shouldn't immediately make them sound like a drowning cat

I would argue that audiences are often heavily influenced by emotional factors. Look at the guy who won BGT, trotting out a war veteran to tug at the patriotic heartstrings of British viewers. If you haven't seen it, watch it and take note of how badly performed his "trick" was, he obviously did not win based on talent. Straight away you see fake shuffling that you might expect to see from a child under 10. Quite obvious exchange of signed card for another. Mucking up the picture reveal. And that is worthy of winning the biggest talent show in Britain?

Don't underestimate how easily people can be manipulated.

I'm bad with names, but the lady from the Phillipines, I thought she oversang her song. She has a great voice, but it came across as trying way too hard.

The Italian girl was really guilty of this. Couldn't understand a word she was singing either. Shame, as she clearly has a very good voice in essence.
