Could a LONG TERM affair work as a storyline?
So I read an anonymous article in The Guardian a while back about a woman who has been having a secret affair for a decade with a work colleague. I think something like this could work really well for one of the soaps.
It would have to be realistic, like this woman mentions how they never write anything down, no love letters or saucy texts. Which characters from which soap do you think could embark on a long term affair without being caught? |

This is the kind of thing I would love a soap to do, but the reality of it happening is very slim

![]() But can you imagine a secret like that coming out after 10 years! That would be the ultimate shock. |

I know, it's all about short term shags for maximum drama.
But can you imagine a secret like that coming out after 10 years! That would be the ultimate shock. I used to work with someone who had been having an affair for about 5 years so it definitely does happen in real life. Another friend of mine found out that her dad had been having an affair on and off for over 20 years ...

I posted this exact idea in a thread the other day.
Long running over years rather than lasting 2-3 weeks like soap affairs do. have us the audience see the cheaters develop the relationship. them lying to their spouses about where they are going etc. the spouses having no idea or occassionally being "paranoid" but convinced otherwise. viewers would get infuriated how do they not see it kind of thing! It would also educate thousands upon thousands of women 😂 |

It would be great, especially if we got to know all the characters involved really well and saw all sides of the story.

I'd really like to see somebody who loves their family dearly, but also wants this secret affair. |

Isn't that what "Sharif's secret" in corrie is all about?

That's not exactly what I mean. I mean seeing it all on screen. Not a convienet secret affair never previously mentioned when the character has nothing to do. Big, big difference.

That would be a great storyline - but it would be super-important that the characters involved have real, visible chemistry. David Wicks and Cindy Beale had chemistry, which is why that affair worked so well (plus they were really strong characters in their own right).
Who would be good candidates for the affair? |

It could but it would require not only the right scripts and actors to carry it off and stick with it long term but the right successive production teams to resist the temptation of just having the reveal for a quick ratings peak. So highly unlikely.

This is why the Sharongate reveal was so epic, because that affair lasted about 2 years.

It had proper long lasting consequences for several characters too. That doesn't happen very often these days.
I can't think which characters would be good though. It would have to be a fairly recently married couple though, so we could see it from the start. |

We need the type of affair that Arthur had with Mrs Hewitt. A man who loves his wife and family but is drawn to a woman that is everything his wife is not. It's a shame they brought that to an end. I'd have liked to have seen her visit his grave after the family had gone. Strangely I never thought less of him because of the affair because I could really see the attraction.

Den Watts had a long-term mistress in Jan Hammond. She was referred to by name only way before she eventually appeared on screen.

The problem is if this did happen people would complain and want the storyline to end.
I think it could work. Nicola and Dan in Emmerdale could have been a good example of this but its finished next week. Same with Zak and Joanie. Could have been a longterm storyline. |

I think this would be great as a storyline however I can see viewers getting bored quickly and demanding that the storyline be ended for 'dragging on'.
I also kinda like the idea of two characters having an affair offscreen for years and then they get caught in the act by someone onscreen in a shock scene. From then on we realise little hints which we didn't recognise before like one of the characters in the background constantly smiling at their phone or being too busy with 'work'. |

You mean like Sharongate or Stax?
Realistically they can only stretch a plot for 2 years because of contracts. You can't have a 10 year plot if an actor quits after 3 years for example unless you recast twice and that would defeat the purpose. |
