I don't care personally, IMO the show needs celebs with different levels of dancing talent and ability. But I've read a lot about Kevin getting another ringer, so I'd like to hear if any of you know what dance training and experience the celebs have.

As Will said in one interview, he went to ArtsEd for one term before winning Pop Idol. He does ballet and contemporary dance classes to keep fit. He was in Cabaret on stage but there was not much dancing for him in that.

At this stage, it seems Kevin has a ringer if he gets paired with someone who is able to walk and breath at the same time

If he is doing ballet and contemporary dance now, he will definitely be one of the better dancer, if not the best.

IMO the BBC should declare exactly how much training that each Celeb has had over the years including any Private one to one Training any of them may have had over the last few months. I remember some of the disgusting posts that were made on here about Natalie Gumede and about her previous training and this should help prevent that sort of Bile.

I agree, let's have it all out in the open. Mind you, I suspect most of the current celebs have had some training.

Gymnastics can also give someone an advantage, so it is not just about dance training.

To a lesser degree but most people do know that Claudia is a gymnast to be fair.

I agree about this. For viewers who don't care about previous dance training, it wouldn't matter, and it would all be out in the open.

Ed Balls has done a bit of line dancing!

I agree, but I think most celebs have some sort of advantage going for them. Many people go frequently to aerobics lessons to stay fit etc. I would limit it to dance training though, getting lessons from a professional dancer in specific dances.

Will's had relationships with 2 professional dancers. Do you think that counts?

He no doubt got some in depth lessons.

I don't care as long as that training is not in ballroom and latin
and the form of training in other styles is not to a high level

That's how I feel. Having a natural dance ability is as much an advantage as any former dance training. Being a musician is an advantage as they can cope with music with no words, some have struggled once they have no words in the music. Being an actor is an advantage as you can "act" the dance and also used to learning things. So many things that put people at an advantage compared to a few ballet/tap lessons they did as a kid.

If Lesley is any good I am waiting for the Anton haters to bring up the fact she did ballet when she was 5 years old - 65 years ago!

I saw Lesley Joseph play Miss Hannigan in Annie on stage and it involved a fair bit of dancing and she was fantastic. That was about 15 years ago, but I'm excited by her.

Last year Anita must have been a trained dancer, because her mother was. I think the transference happens in utero. It's less clear whether ringeryness can be caught from the exchange of bodily fluids.

Lesley did ballet aged around 5 but we don't know how long for

Danny did some dancing about eight years ago

Melvin was a dance teacher - https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbi...dance-teacher/

Laura does (or did) Irish dancing. Thought I also saw something somewhere about her doing tap.

Well Louise was a judge on one of the dance shows although people did comment at the time as to why so was qualified to be a judge. In the launch show she wasn't looking as good as I thought she would be.

I honestly don't think getting it out in the open would help prevent the bile, because the hateful ones are going to spew their bile anyway, whether they feel they've been 'deceived' (and I use that word with the most inverted of commas) or not. That's internet trolls for you.

I agree. I watch the German version and a couple of series ago it became clear very quickly that not only had none of the contestants had any previous dance training, but not one of them had any natural ability either. It made for pretty dire viewing.

I'd always had mixed feelings about "ringers" before that, but it convinced me that, in order to have the most entertaining show, you do need to know in advance that at least some of the participants are going to produce reasonably executed, watchable routines.

Exactly. Imagine 15 celebs with the Jeremy Vine level of dancing. No one would watch that. There needs to be both for the show to be entertaining.

Sadly, I think that's true. Natalie Gumede was open about her experience but it didn't stop the bile. I suppose there's an argument that if there was 'full declaration' from all, the bile might be more evenly distributed, but I'm not sure it would matter. Some folk "just can't warm" to someone 😏 , and they go looking for a stick....

Just think how boring it would be if everybody who enters Strictly as a contestant has no idea how to dance at all. Ed Balls said yesterday that he thinks it 'should be' about those who can't dance learning to dance.

Well, yes, maybe so. But he does have a new book out, so probably won't mind the extra visibility. And he did dabble in a bit of ballroom at university, so not a complete novice himself.

If last year proves anything, it's the point that it's not just about being able to do the steps in something approaching the right order, or whether you attended dance lessons in the past. It's about talent, musicality, artistic interpretation, building relationships, working as a team and how the contestants learn to cope when they're way out of their comfort zone in the limelight every week, baring their souls in front of judges of varying credibility. We'll laugh at some, cringe at others, lose our tempers at the judging, be astounded by unexpected talent and artistry - there's something in there for everybody.

I don't know who will win this year, and I haven't yet seen anyone that really catches my imagination like last year, but I do know that I do watch Strictly because I love dancing, and that enjoyment is vastly enhanced by seeing someone with exceptional talent doing it really well. Others may watch for different reasons, but that's mine.

I don't think TPTB worry too much about whether or not people have 'previous' or not, they'll be looking for a variety of abilities and everybody brings something to the show.
