I know that both Garlic and Onions are really bad for dogs, but can anyone tell me if its the same with garlic flavoured foods?

Last night we had a shop bought garlic and herb coated roast chicken which we cooked in the oven, however there were tons left and I considered for a second whether to give some to the dog, but the OH pointed out it had garlic on the skin.

Would it have been ok to give her some breast meat without the skin, or would it have been dangerous because the garlic would have infused into the meat?

From now on we will get a plain chicken to avoid this issue in the future but was wondering if we were just being paranoid by not giving her any, much to Georgie's dismay!!

I would give mine it without the skin, skin isn't good for them anyway. A small amount of garlic is ok now and then, a lot of people give their dogs garlic capsules as it supposedly deters fleas but I'd be wary of that. Garlic and onion salts should be avoided too as they are concentrated.

Maybe I'm over-protective, but, aside from the garlic issue, I personally wouldn't give an animal any food that's processed or has been pre-seasoned or coated - it will probably contain additives, maybe some sugars and certainly salt, which is not at all healthy. My elderly cat sometimes gets 'human' food, but I'll cook it for him specially, with no cooking oil or salt or any other kind of seasoning.

There is a lot of debate on garlic, but so many sites say it is toxic so I've avoided it as much as possible, but wondered if I'm being way over cautious.
Georgie was hoping to get some seeing as she could smell the cooked chicken for hours but we unfortunately disappointed her greatly!

Wouldnt have given it my dog with garlic on it, no matter how little the amount! Mine does however get plain chicken skin off a cooked chicken, which she goes absolutely wild for

I guess I came to dog owning before all the scare stories so trial and error was the way, even give my dogs onions if they are in stews etc, always did before they said it was bad and had never had a problem, same with chocolate etc obviously only small amounts it's dogs that get lots of these things that have caused us all to panic.

It's not panic, just educating ourselves about healthy diets for animals. It's true that in small quantities these things aren't going to cause long-term harm if it's not on a regular basis, but if you know something isn't good for your pets, why give it to them at all?
