i know this has been mentioned a few times, and I am certain someone will direct me to a previous thread, and that is very kind of them, but can someone please explain to me TalkTalk's ridiculous refusal to provide it's customers with HD channels.
Now we all know they can be streamed, thanks to BT, but I wonder is it that the box can't handle it? Surely not, or is it that TalkTalk just don't give a damn?
I currently use TalkTalk Tv and find it suitable, but would like HD.
Answers on a postcard.

I agree. There is no technical reason why TalkTalk's Sky channels cannot be streamed in HD. The TalkTalk Player has plenty of HD material in it, as does Netflix and the BBC iPlayer. Cost, and possibly licensing, must therefore be the reason. UK TV seems happy enough to let BT have their channels in HD, but the Sky channels only appear on TalkTalk. Apparently BT tried for them, but Sky wouldn't play.

Of course, it wouldn't be in Sky"s best interests to let rivals show its best stuff at the same sort of quality that they can provide. That is why the likes of Sky Sports tend to cost more on rival platforms.

TalkTalk has also set out its stall to be the cheapest pay TV provider. They make great play of it in their advertising. Unfortunately, they are becoming the cheapest in every sense of the word. They have just lost 300,000 customers. There have been rumours that BT wants to buy out TalkTalk's YouView business so that they can develop the platform to rival Sky Q. The rumours are about five months old now, and I haven't heard anything recently, so it may come to nothing. If it does happen, though, all TalklTalk YouView subscribers will suddenly find themselves with the BT service, which is liable to have a lot more HD on it, but will certainly cost more.

I think overall BT TV looks a far better than TalkTalk TV even if BT TV don't have most of the Sky channels.
The BT Youview Humax made boxes are even far better from what I have heard.
BT seemed to have put all there packages up in price apart from there TV service. So I would think there TV service will go up in price next year.
Some pepole like me have BT TV or TalkTalk TV as they are not to keen on paying Sky's high prices. Even Virgin Media is becoming very dear in the areas of the UK that it covers.
TalkTalk could have HD channels if it wanted but for some reason have choosing not to.

TalkTalk have to pay BT Wholesale to use its TV Connect multicast network.

BT Wholesale will charge more for HD Distribution in addition to SD Distribution.

There's your answer. TalkTalk have decided people want cheap TV rather than paying BT Wholesale more than twice for SD/HD simulcasting.

Roll on the day when HD isn't seen as a premium product, and broadcasters only distribute the one (HD) version.

Of course TalkTalk could just ask their customers which services they would like. Would be an interesting poll to say the least.

They would want HD but for no more than the price they presently pay of course.

What the customer would like and what they are prepared to pay for are very different things.

Even with fibre, if I watch iPlayer in HD my router reboots about once every 30 minutes. I wonder if Talk Talk have a known issue that stops them launching more HD streaming content?

I get plenty of HD channels on my YouView box, but no Sky channels. There again I don't really want them.

But when HD becomes the 'standard' broadcast quality, threads like this will still exist asking why more channels aren't available in 4K. It's a never ending cycle of upgrades.
