Hello

I'm getting a 'new line' installed with Plusnet later this week (Fiber to cab). I live in a flat which seems to have only been supplied with cable services before. There is a phone socket already in the flat, however the cable out the back of this box through the exterior wall of my flat runs to a grey 'cable tel' box. There is no other phone socket or copper wire connection as far as I can see anywhere in the property. Can anyone tell me if the engineers will be able to get my broadband on same day or whether they'll have to drag a new copper cable up into the flat. If they do, can they get me online same day?

Cheers!

If your flat has never had anything other than cable you will need a new cable run in for the phone and broadband service. BT Openreach cannot and will not use anything associated with the cable network. Though some slightly dodgy installs have nicked the cable phone socket which strictly speaking they should never do.

So someone will need to install a new cable and socket into your home. In theory once that is done both phone and broadband can be activated at the same time as they both use the same copper pair. Though knowing Openreach, one team will install the physical cable, a second team will connect and test your phone service and a third team will connect and test the broadband.

And there is no guarantee what order those three teams will turn up in!

If its a copper cable running to a cable tel box with no other copper connection into the property is it likely its never been connected to BT lines then?

If the box on the wall says CableTel then that is what morphed into NTL and eventually Virgin, That uses a completely independent network to BT Openreach.

So it will be a totally new installation all the way back to your local roadside cabinet or telegraph pole. Assuming there is no BT Openreach cabling in the flats at all.

There are brown BT boxes on the walls of flats further down the road. Guess we're gonna have fun when the engineer turns up and realises its not a simple job.

In theory (and I stress the word theory ) BT should know what properties they have cabled up or not as the case may be. So should be prepared to do a full new line installation.
