Yes, it is clear that Still Game was originally made for a Scottish audience. Which is perfectly fine. Perhaps "parochial" was a wrong choice of word, but in my view it is one of the those stupid sitcoms in the vein of Citizen Khan and Father Figure. It wasn't funny at all, and my Scottish friend last night, who has been watching it for years and years, said that making it more mainstream had ruined its charm. Obviously I can't comment on that because I didn't see any of the original series', but it just wasn't funny.

Now, Rab. C. Nesbit on the other hand, absolutely hilarious! The Scots are capable of producing some terrific comedy and I would welcome more Scottish comedy on TV. But Still Game? It didn't raise a smile let alone a laugh.

After the disappointing stage show i wasn't too sure if a new series would work. I was wrong, i really enjoyed it last night.

I never liked Nesbit, but then comedy is very subjective. I thought last night's episode was ok, it had a few moments.

Agree with you on Goodnight Sweetheart. If there was one new series that was crying out to be made again, after the recent new episodes, it was that. Can't understand that BBC decision.

I think the further North you go in England, the less of an issue you have with thinking of it as either "too Scottish" or "too parochial".

Enjoyed it. Sets seem darker with the way it's filmed. Took a bit of getting used to. Good to have it back.

It was a good comeback with a few lol moments. It just wasn't as good as the older series.

I don't think Still Game is too niche. I think it's puerile! But, I like to give things a fair chance and I'll watch the next episode to see if it hits on me. Sometimes things do. Nesbitt was sometimes poignant and you kind of felt for the character. It had a sense of being able to identify with the situations. Still Game is Citizen Khan in Glasgow - in that you are meant to laugh at them and not with them.

I'd never seen the show before, but have heard people raving about it for some time now and decided to give it watch. It was pretty good, not exactly laugh a minute for me but the acting was good. I'll likely be watching next week.

Good to see hem back and good to see the BBC giving it a decent slot. Lets hope they keep it up unlike the original series which they put on at differing times every week. It was almost like they wanted it to fail.
I can remember watching the hilarious " KIll Wullie" episode on DVD and turning over to see that atrophied cack Last of the Summer Wine and thinking WTF How many series?Another example of the famous BBC Scottish blindness perhaps.

Still Game has a new intro, to accommodate for it being filmed in high definition.

https://youtu.be/7o3b2nsBIm8

Enjoy.

I did find it a bit disconcerting that they tinkered with the titles, as it's an iconic part of the show.

Was great to see it back in it's old Friday night slot at 9:30, takes me back to my high school days that.

And i much prefer the previous arrangement of the theme, which for me really signalled the beginning of the weekend. The updated version seems to have lost it's punchiness and oomph. Still Game was all we talked about on the Monday morning back. Ah happy days..

A one-off special for Hogmanay would be amazing, but looks unlikely. I would love a Ronald Villiers spin-off though

Villiers was classic, as were the two elderly gays who went out slumming it just to get turned on by the 'banter'.

Plenty Scotch and Wry on youtube and it is quite superb

I have recently started to watch Rab C Nesbitt again on youtube and I had forgotten how good it was. The first 4 seasons in particular are very very funny

Still Game is OK, nothing special and not a patch on the 2 above.

Now I am no prude and can swear with the best of them, but I find Still Game uses too many swear words for cheap laughs. Neither Scotch and Wry nor Nesbitt had to rely on swearing for laughs

Still comedy is subjective......

Christ, what an insult.

I don't think you've ever been to Glasgow if that's what you believe.

For a chewin' the fat spin-off/one-off I would have loved to a seen a 30 minute special of 'Bools' based on their parody of the fly-on-the-wall documentary fad from the late 90's/early 2000's

Also, to get us in the mood for episode 2 this Friday, lets go back to the final episode of series 1 of Still Game, and Jack & Victor's entries for the Scones competition.

Jacks Entry:-
Scone's, they are smashing.
And really quite delicious.
I keep mine in that cupboard there,
right beside ma dishes.

Victor's Entry:-
A scone & tea at half past three,
makes you day a little brighter.
So keep your cakes and fancy tarts,
and stick them up your Shiter.

Who's entry was better?

Also as a bonus here's Jack's little limerick about the cinema they visit (The GFT) after a run in with the ticket seller

Come and joins us at the GFT,
run by a pr*ck who's spotty and speccy!

All a bit meh for me. Not dreadful, not great. But I'll probably watch again to see how it goes.
