Dot was a narrow minded sow back in the day but she recognised she was wrong about Colin because no matter what she said about him, he was always kind and supportive to her, by 1988 they were really close and he would help her out when Nick came around. What was disappointing is that when he left the show (same ep as Dens death) his final scenes were with Ethel and not Dot. Massive shame
