Coronation Street has shown equally explicit opposite sex romance scenes. Unless every single person complaining now was moaning about that too, they're being a homophobic hypocrite.

Exactly. Its sad but homophobia is alive and well.

I've read over a few of the tweets and it's so disappointing

People making comments about not wanting to know what the couples would get up to is ridiculous. The two characters kissed, laid together on a bed.. They weren't stripped down to just pants and talking explicitly to one another. For goodness sake.

As a gay guy myself, my biggest problem is the amount of homophobia towards it. We're in the year 2016.

Easy to say "just ignore it and it will go away" except it's just simply not that simple. Especially when they go on to borderline defamatory you can't just simply "ignore" at that point.

Take a certain former leader of the EDL for example (who I refuse to name), he once tweeted out that a 7 year old girl got raped by Muslims in a School Loo and started spreading this to his followers...Except that never happened, he blatantly lied about it. If
that got left alone unchallenged God knows how many gullible folks would've fell for it just to suit their Anti-Muslim Fix.

Back to this subject, believe it or not there are still folks out there who spread false information about Homosexuals either "spreading Aids" or being "Perverts/Peados", that is NOT OK and needs to be called out on it. Point is some things just can't simply be "ignored".

And this can all be done without "ranting" about it. ”

Fair enough guys, like I say it's not me who's being got at so it's unfair of me to comment, just trying to show a bit of 'solidarity' so to speak!! Maybe those trolls will find a well balanced & thoughtful appraisal of their comments even more unpalatable than ignoring them!!
I am on your side though!! What Broadshoulder was saying above simply shouldn't happen in this day & age & must be pretty bloody soul destroying when it does, especially if it's from someone you thought you could trust as a friend!!

Sadly a lot of homophobia still does exist from personal experience.

I didn’t watch EE when Syed and Christian featured so I can’t comment on them. My comments are ONLY about EE at the moment, literally during this past year or so.

Paul was a lovely character once they bothered to give him a personality. The problem was that they failed to give him a personality when he was just Ben’s little toy to pick up and put down depending on what was happening with Abi that week. Once that storyline finished we found out shortly afterwards that he’d been axed, and that’s when they started writing for Paul properly. It was insulting because we knew where it was going, and we were right. Paul was killed off so that EE could do an admittedly important storyline on homophobic hate crime, but look where we’re at with that now. An absolute farce of an episode last night based on contrivances and Mitchell clichés. Paul was, throughout his entire character span, a complete plot device. The writers just weren’t interested in him as a person.

Ben is one of my favourite characters but he’s also one of the most divisive and controversial characters on the show. When he’s happy we know it won’t last, when he’s angry he’s borderline psychotic and abusive to the people who care about him. He’s definitely an interesting and complex character but he’s also the only gay character the writers seem to care about currently and therefore he presents a very one-sided view of homosexuality. Oh, and the homophobic attack will no doubt have sent him hurtling back into the closet whenever he next attempts a relationship. So IMO he’s extremely problematic.

Tina and Sonia are terrible characters, yes, but that’s the point I’m trying to make. I would never call someone a bad character based purely on their sexuality! What I’m trying to say is how lacking the gay characters are at the moment. Tina is a perpetual woman child who says the word ‘boobies’ a lot like an infant (not to mention being a bit of a sleaze, sleeping with that Sophie girl who looked younger than her daughter…), while Sonia is a nagging bore who will be leaving her soon.

EE maybe led the way once upon a time when it came to gay characters but it certainly isn’t at the moment. There’s nothing to get excited about because the writers apparently don’t want to give us gay relationships we can get excited about, that get people hot under the collar when they’re watching, that are presented completely equally to the straight relationships on the show.

Although with that said, there are only a small handful of shippable straight relationships on the show right now, so maybe it’s an issue with creating these relationships in general. Off the top of my head the only ones I currently see as ‘working’ are Kush/Denise, Martin/Stacey, Whitney/Lee (which isn't going to last anyway), Mick/Linda and Vincent/Kim (and they're pretty hit and miss as Vincent is such a poorly developed character these days.)

What a stupid, uninformed opinion. Good parents choose the right time to explain things to their children in a considered way when it's appropriate and don't expect to have to stop what they're doing to explain something at a time when it should be "safe" to let them watch.

Personally I prefer to keep the graphic stuff (by which I mean overdone sex - between two men, two women, a mixture of each or a goat - and excessive violence, etc) for when the kids are in bed, as do most people, which is why the watershed exists. It's called having a choice. Glad it amused you though.

Don't worry about it, I know you meant no harm. I just wanted to point out why I personally disagree with the "ignore" response to these bigots.

There was nothing broadcast last night on Coronation Street that was unsuitable for a pre-watershed audience. Nothing.

Thanks for your considered opinion.

Good parents would take the time to explain to their children that gay people exist and that there is nothing "unsafe" or abnormal about seeing two men kiss. There was nothing graphic about the scene and it was completely fine to be broadcast pre-watershed. Corrie have broadcast similar scenes between straight couples without a peep of criticism. It's only when two men kiss that we have drama queens making a huge bloody fuss.

If you don't want your children watching two men kiss, don't let them watch soaps. Simple as.

I suspect corrie do the scenes like that with an air of this will get people talking about corrie, plus it's a box ticked, the passionate gay relationship box.

So let's get this straight.
You are basically saying everyone has to enjoy or like watching two men having full on kissing because if the don't they are homophobic. You sound more intolerant than any anti gay bigot.

When Eva slathered over Aidan - good for her
When Billy and Todd were at it - all hell breaks loose

QED homophobia. Simple really...

Why do you treat gay men kissing any different to straight kissing on TV?

Only if you intolerant of other peoples views.
People can fully accept gay couples and gay rights but that should not mean they should have to like watching two men having full on kisses. Being hetro I would refuse point blank to kiss a man like that for a scene. No doubt you and others will call me a homophobe now. Doesn't matter that I have a best friend who I love dearly and who happens to be Bisexual.

If I remember correctly, Eva unbuttoned Aidan's shirt seductively and gave him a kiss lasting about one second, ditto when Leanne kissed Nick at the end of last night's episode just before they headed off to the bedroom. The Billy-Todd snogging was a lot more full on than either scene.

I am afraid you are a homophobe. No denying it.

And how do you feel when this bisexual friend gets with another man?

But was thee this uproar about Eva and Leanne. No? But there has been about Todd and Billy

You can make your own judgements on that?

Why would kissing a man be any different to kissing a woman to whom you were not sexually attracted? I'm not meaning to be confrontational, I'm genuinely curious. Do you assume that actors must find their co-star attractive to perform a kissing scene?

I think there is a big difference between 'enjoying' watching a sex scene and feeling moved to complain about it, suggesting that it shouldn't be included at all.

Despite being straight and thinking Chris Gascoyne is a very attractive man, I didn't 'enjoy' watching the Peter and Tina snogging scenes. I didn't 'enjoy' watching Billy and Todd. But I do think they have equal right to be included in the show.

But why are you bothered by gay men kissing, you obviously find it different to straight kissing in a negative way?

I really don't give a damn if you or others on here think I'm a homophone. You can't even begin to see how extreme and intolerant you are.

Well said. It can feel like racism is totally unacceptable, but homophobia is at times. Both should be unacceptable at ALL times.

Please bear in mind I was brainwashed when I was younger that this is/was not normal.

I think I'm digging myself a hole here sorry. Imagine in 30 years time the tide changes and it's considered wrong again, everything that you have come to accept as normal suddenly isn't - can you see where I'm coming from?

I have gay family, I love them dearly and wish them nothing but happiness but I don't want to imagine what they get up to behind closed doors.

You don't seem a homophobe, but your post lacks common sense if I'm honest.

If you're aware you were 'brainwashed' into thinking it was wrong, and you're now aware you live in a more accepting society, surely it wouldn't be too hard to see sense and realise it's perfectly normal behaviour and isn't wrong at all.

Sorry if that sounds abrupt.
