I didn’t watch EE when Syed and Christian featured so I can’t comment on them. My comments are ONLY about EE at the moment, literally during this past year or so.
Paul was a lovely character once they bothered to give him a personality. The problem was that they failed to give him a personality when he was just Ben’s little toy to pick up and put down depending on what was happening with Abi that week. Once that storyline finished we found out shortly afterwards that he’d been axed, and that’s when they started writing for Paul properly. It was insulting because we knew where it was going, and we were right. Paul was killed off so that EE could do an admittedly important storyline on homophobic hate crime, but look where we’re at with that now. An absolute farce of an episode last night based on contrivances and Mitchell clichés. Paul was, throughout his entire character span, a complete plot device. The writers just weren’t interested in him as a person.
Ben is one of my favourite characters but he’s also one of the most divisive and controversial characters on the show. When he’s happy we know it won’t last, when he’s angry he’s borderline psychotic and abusive to the people who care about him. He’s definitely an interesting and complex character but he’s also the only gay character the writers seem to care about currently and therefore he presents a very one-sided view of homosexuality. Oh, and the homophobic attack will no doubt have sent him hurtling back into the closet whenever he next attempts a relationship. So IMO he’s extremely problematic.
Tina and Sonia are terrible characters, yes, but that’s the point I’m trying to make. I would never call someone a bad character based purely on their sexuality! What I’m trying to say is how lacking the gay characters are at the moment. Tina is a perpetual woman child who says the word ‘boobies’ a lot like an infant (not to mention being a bit of a sleaze, sleeping with that Sophie girl who looked younger than her daughter…), while Sonia is a nagging bore who will be leaving her soon.
EE maybe led the way once upon a time when it came to gay characters but it certainly isn’t at the moment. There’s nothing to get excited about because the writers apparently don’t want to give us gay relationships we can get excited about, that get people hot under the collar when they’re watching, that are presented completely equally to the straight relationships on the show.
Although with that said, there are only a small handful of shippable straight relationships on the show right now, so maybe it’s an issue with creating these relationships in general. Off the top of my head the only ones I currently see as ‘working’ are Kush/Denise, Martin/Stacey, Whitney/Lee (which isn't going to last anyway), Mick/Linda and Vincent/Kim (and they're pretty hit and miss as Vincent is such a poorly developed character these days.)
