Dara O Briain's Go 8 Bit
did anyone watch Dara O Briain's Go 8 Bit on dave at 8pm last night? i thought it was quite good usual tv panel show fare with Dara O Briain as host. it was funny and they played some old games like tetris, chuckie egg, tekken, battlefront and bust a move.
mods feel free to move if you think it should be in the tv section just thought the gaming community on here might not see it there. |

Was on at 10pm.
I really liked it, it shows the public what games are truly about, a bit of fun and a laugh. |

I didn't see it, might give it a watch later if I'm at a loss for something to do. |

I thought it was a nice idea slightly let down by its execution.
Of the hour show barely any of it was the actual gaming, and what there was of it was hectic camerawork apparently designed to make it as difficult as possible to work out what was actually going on in the game at times, and just lots of chaotic shouting and laughing. The whole "rotate the studio" gag was funny the first time but was definitely grating by the fifth time and the audience participation voting to get the scores they were playing for was a bit awkwardly tacked on. But the basic concept is good and seeing what games they will play is interesting so will tune in for the next one to see if they iron out some of the format a bit. Like all these kind of shows ultimately it will depend on having decent guests too. |

Ooft, that was pretty unwatchable. Very very noisy, no jokes, dislikeable people playing games badly.
Is Susan Calman on every week or is it different people? They need to get rid of the gimmicks like weird controllers and blindfolds and stuff. The straight up vs game of tekken worked much better I thought. "OK, we're rotating the stage, everyone act as punchable as you possibly can! That's it, I want you to die! Perfect!" |

I posted a thread about it in TV: UK when the episode went up on UKTV about 5 days in advance of the premier and that thread has received a whopping 0 replies so good to see there's some discussion going on about it.
I actually really liked it. Pros: - The panel all clearly love games and Dara was a great choice of host given how into games and technology he is. - I really enjoyed the game variation, Battlefront from the modern day, Tekken from the early 90s, plus some more obscure retro stuff as well as cutting edge tech, pretty good mix of stuff. - I like the fact that each game gets a rundown of trivia before playing the games, so it's not just "Here's some comedians, here's some games, now roll credits". - The show in general really evokes the experience of couch co-op, just on a larger scale, and that's no bad thing at all. - The audience voting seems gimmicky at first but the way the majority percentage becomes the amount of points the teams end up competing for adds a really interesting element to the show imo, especially if a team proves themselves to be consistently good. Cons: - That stage rotation is beyond cringey and I've heard from several people that it was enough to make them want to stop watching. They really should just rotate the stage as the trivia is being read out so the TV audience isn't subjected to a weird little dance every 10 minutes. Some people will be very nitpicky and state that the show shouldn't have 8 bit in the title because most games on show aren't 8 bit, some will say that Youtubers are doing this exact thing but better (honestly most Youtubers just make me cringe myself into a coma so I personally would much rather watch this) and some will say that the show isn't watching due to the fact that the people who appear aren't "good enough" at games - which is just a really holier than thou take on it - but honestly I thought it was a great hour of entertainment and if the show can keep delivering tense little matches like the Tekken match then I'm all for it. |

I made it past the typical gamer "playing in my underpants" cliche, and the awful rotate the studio, but I switched off at blindfolded Tetris.
I thought it was atrocious. Bring back VGN. |

4 player Tetris Party would have been better than blindfold Tetris.
All in all, quite an enjoyable show, however the guests were pretty abysmal at the games even though they chose to play some of them. David James were useless at Tekken and Battlefront, I'm guessing he plays Tekken on the easiest difficulty setting. And that female contestant picked Chuckie Egg even though it looked like she had never played it before. |

It's not perfect by any means, but I spent an hour in front of the TV with a smile on my face. Job done. Quote:

Tried watchimg it, didn't enjoy it. Most of them didn't seem that knowledgeable or even seemed to care that much about gaming, the larger woman was irritating and was there any reason they played an ancient version of tekken, rather than one of the newer games? David James picked it as his favourite series but then was ridiculously bad at it. If I'm going to essentially be watching people playing games and not much else, they should at least be interestimg people, or know what they're doing imo.

Stage spinning, super annoying! Not enough games and too much nonsense! The "expert" was annoying, a mate of Dara's wanting a cushy job?
Added to the fact that only 2 of the games could be considered 8 bit anyway! When I read tetris and chuckie egg I was hoping to see more 8 bit stuff from my childhood! Just had a blast on Chuckie egg and did the level in 21 seconds. Maybe we should do a leaderboard! How long did they take? |

Bit like watching your mum trying to have a shot after a couple of sherries at Christmas - Gina Yashere just shouting "what's going on? What's going on? What happened?", jumping up and down into a spike.
