EE tops speed and reliability as O2 stands still in 4th place
Everything Goes
06-09-2016
The latest RootMetrics have given EE top scores for speed and call reliability with Three in 2nd Place, Vodafone in 3rd Place and O2 last. However O2 has been criticised for concentrating 4G in bulit up areas and its results haven't changed from the previous results.

Quote:
“O2’s results across our UK-wide testing were similar to what we found in the second half of 2015. O2’s rankings remained identical in the categories of overall performance, network reliability, network speed, and data performance. O2’s rankings in both the call and text categories, however, decreased from second in our previous round of testing to fourth in the first half of 2016.

O2’s lower ranking in the call performance category was largely due to Vodafone’s greatly improved call results at the UK-wide level; Vodafone improved its rank in the call category from fourth in second-half 2015 testing into a two-way tie for second with Three. In the text category, O2’s UK Text RootScore remained quite strong at 90.6, but O2’s text performance was overshadowed by those of Vodafone and Three, which tied for second place in the category.

If O2 expands its 4G services beyond metropolitan areas, O2’s performance could show improvement at the UK and nation levels in the second half of 2016 and beyond.”

Personally I've found that Vodafone in my area has improved their 4G coverage as O2 have ground to a halt. Perhaps they were hoping to get the merger with Three approved and sat back didn't do very much. O2 have a coverage obligation to meet in 15 months time and for a while I have wondered if they will make it. This suggests that Ofcom may have to warn them about their licence obligations unless they pull thier socks up.

All I will now say is - take a CAT 9 device on EE to London and try a speedtest now

There's a reason why EE exclude speedtest.net from the data allowance right? cos you guys are obsessed, they should make that the headline selling point.

Meanwhile the practical use case is yet to be realised... "but Thine, it means they're a stronger network with more capacity"...if you say so... if you say so... ()

This is Rootmetrics firstly which although they offer the testing app also do a lot of their own drive and city testing to a very detailed level which the networks buy to get a very good picture of their networks. Also Speedtest.net isn't whitelisted on EE.

I'm hoping that for the 2016 2H test they use Galaxy S7s as they will show what EE and Vodafone are fully capable of in speed terms.
Plymouthbloke1974 are you able to give any hints on how widespread cat9 is in London?
