If she was recast everyone on here would moan that whoever replaced her was nowhere near as good as the original, so there would be no point

Yes, just leave it. She can serve no useful purpose now, and she seems to have made a good life for herself post-EE. Oh yes, and nu-Martin is ten times the actor and character than the old one (sorry, James!). Nu-Ben is the best Ben yet as well. |

She was an obnoxious little mare with a rotten attitude who slept with the ex-husband of her best friend. And she got pregnant, knowing that Sharon and Grant were unable to make babies. Has any character on this programme ever heard of, or used, contraception? Sheesh!

Of course viewers that weren't born when the show started count and nobody is saying the character can't be criticized - several people have in this thread.
But equally, as somebody has said, why should the people that never watched her even be so keen on her coming back as they can't have any actual investment in the character. It is the people that actually watched her that would be most interested in a return - they are also the people that would find a recast most jarring so it is a bit of a catch 22. In general I don't mind recasts - if the character is really needed and the actor can't or won't return, then it is unavoidable and usually the audience gets used to it after a while but there will always be some, viewers that were very invested in the character during their first stint, or particularly like the first actor, that won't adjust. I do often think that the viewers that have the most trouble, it is if they were fairly young during the first stint - they grew up with them so just can't imagine anybody else doing it. I do think that there are a few, a very few characters that do take on such an iconic status, that are so rooted, not just in soap fans but the general publics consciousness that a recast is impossible. Characters like Dot Cotton, Den Watts, Grant Mitchell, Bet Lynch, Hilda Ogden, Ken Barlow, JR Ewing, Alexis Carrington, where the very name conjures an image of the actors face, even to casual viewers years or decades after they've left. I think the ones where everybody feels that a recast is impossible are fairly few. But I also think that all viewers have quite a few more where they personally consider the character iconic as played by a particular actor and that they should never be recast. I do think that the members of the original cast do fall into that category for most people that did watch at the start though some more than others - I doubt people would be as appalled at the idea of a Kelvin Carpenter recast as they are Michelle. As a side point, although agree Michelle was a selfish cow who really should have shown restraint and not slept with her best friends ex husband only weeks after their relationship ended for good (Sharon admitted shek5 fallen back in love with him during her revenge plan in 1995) - there weren't any fertility issues at that point. Sharon could and did fall pregnant to Grant at that time - the conception problems sprung from an infection she contracted following her aborting Grant's baby in 95. She had been secretly on the Pill during their marriage as she felt the time wasn't right to have the baby he was pressuring her to have. |
