Sounds underproduced, almost like a demo. Her vocals sound shrill, virtually no chorus, boring lyrics and it just sort of plods along. Very disappointing. I get what she was going for. But there's a difference between trying something different, and then trying something so different that you end up not even sounding like yourself.

i like everything Gaga does, i like the song, however its not great, Applause was a far superior opening single, so i am not expecting the new Album to sell more than Artpop.
To be honest this week i prefer the new Sia song.

LOVE it!!!

I think anything Gaga releases will have similar levels of the "Adele Factor", some love it and some don't

For me I'm a fan before and a bigger fan now, it's on repeat!

You're bang on about the vocals. There's a review in The Guardian which states she chose not to put her vocals through any kind of digital processing, which is brave but as you state-sound a bit ragged.
I'm a massive fan of Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) who co-produced this so had high expectations, but this leaves me cold unfortunately.

Unsure yet. I have never found any of Gaga's lead singles to be instant grabbers anyway so i will give it some time.

This is pants! I was expecting something great this time after the lukewarm reaction to ARTPOP but this is terrible. As someone said it sounds so underproduced to the point it plays like a leaked demo. Her vocals are awful, the lyrics - very bad and it just doesn't go anywhere. This song is more like an album filler track than a lead single. Maybe she is holding the better stuff off for later but as mentioned on the thread, Sia, Beyonce, Adele are all way out in front of her now. I think its becoming very apparent Gaga peaked too early in her career.

Such a shame, I thought Mark Ronson would be to Gaga what William Orbit is to Madonna. Guess I called it very wrong

It's alright, I agree with a lot of others that it's a very generic sounding sound. I mean the song is basically her just saying either "It's wasn't looooveeee" or "It was a perfect illusion". I expect this will grow on me though the more I listen to it.

Applause is 1000% times better as a leading song though.

It's okay. Not as instant as I'd hope. On my third listen now and it's growing on me but I was really hoping it would be something that would smash it...and I don't think it will. It sounds too much like the stuff on Artpop, which I like but I wanted something fresher from her at this point.

On first listen I was like ...wow that was short and the key change sounded a little out of place. I wasn't sure. It had the rock style I had hoped and actually does remind me a little of applause with shades of black Jesus/heavy metal lover. Anyhow, like many of Gaga songs they become more likeable the more you hear them. And I really like it now. I also like how she is singing with her huskier voice au natural. I am excited for the album and especially the second release as that's usually the killer track.

As in "Do what you want" from Artpop?

I love Perfect Illusion. It is a tad repetitive but I love the raw, real vocals and lack of vocal tweaking. It feels really honest in comparison to the lofty Applause. I think it's a grower.

I quite like it on first listen. It's probably a grower too.

One thing's for sure, it's a MUCH better lead single than Applause. Releasing a song about how you live for attention was the worst possible choice to start off an era when people were starting to go off Gaga and think of her as up herself and too big for her boots.

I'm surprised at the amount of appreciation towards Applause. Don't get me wrong, I like it. However it's messy, it's too much, the video is terrible and it began a real failure of an era.

I think PI is a nod back to The Fame/BTW days. It's simplistic and still powerful at the same time.

Applause was absolutely dreadful. The production sounded so cheap and tinny and it was just such a lazy effort.
Perfect Illusion is a massive improvement.

I also found it difficult to like Applause, it grow on me though but not by much. I only liked a handful of songs on Artpop. LG revealed on Radio1 this morning that LG5 has a name, and that it is coming out this year! Can't wait!

Madonnaesque I would say.

I wish Gaga had stuck to the guitar riff at the beginning.

I really like it. Much better than Applause.

I wish she would pronounce words normally, it doesn't make it more interesting. She's a very good singer but her voice isn't that nice If you pay too much attention to it.

I anticipate a pre-Christmas November release.

Her speaking voice sounded so rough this morning on Radio 1. I bet she was less than pleased that Grimmy told everyone she'd gone outside for a fag . She really should not smoke, she'll ruin her voice.

I feel like I've been listening to a different song to everyone else!

Applause wasn't great but this isn't good either. The best part of the track is the production. The lyrics are just dire. the song goes no where at all. She more or less spends the entire 3 minutes just singing 'it wasn't love, it wasn't love, it was a perfect illusion'. I think once her fanbase have purchased the song it will drop like a stone.

I just hope the second single is better.

She needs to pull it out the ball park this time. Beyonce has stolen her thunder some what.
Are you talking about Beyonce's live event's & how Lemonade 'flash' promotion helped to project that live event, as Lemonade's sales have been unremarkable for such a world star, with such a live draw.

Artpop was pretty much a disaster in terms of sales compared to her earlier releases, but didn't have the promotional 'short term' budget of 'Lemonade' it seems to me.As far as live events went though, Gaga didn't seem to have that much of a drop-off, although probably not much of a draw as Beyonce is, quite.Cheek to cheek was a strange commercial direction.Almost as if it was a way of stepping out of the limelight, but not disappearing.Live it was on a much lower scale that her solo tours as well, understandibly.

Perhap's Gaga doesn't need a massively commercial success from this album.Adele has massive album sales, but as a live attraction she not at the level of Beyonce, possibly cannot still match Gaga.Adele is only 6th ranked in live grossing tours (mid year - pollstar).Top artists commercial success is based on their live draw these days.Presence in the charts is important, but not as important as it once was.

I feel the same. I had big expectations because I think Mark Ronson is a really good producer. I loved the album he did for Duran Duran a few years ago.
I don't like how she sings now with all that screaming. She wasn't like that at the beginning of her career. I guess it's because she feels she has to prove she can sing, but it's overdone.

You mean her writers, producers and her husband has. Beyonce has as much input into her music as Britney does, almost none. A puppet on a string.

I don't think that's true. Beyonce does have input although she doesn't do everything herself. She has more input that Britney.
Gaga doesn't write everything herself either, she has lots of co-writers and producers on this album.
