I don't see how ARTPOP was too artistic for me to understand. It is nothing more than a generic pop album.
Born This Way is actually her most artistic work. Perfect llusion would not have even made the final cut on that and she has done this rock thing before. Songs like Highway Unicorn from Born This Way capture the vibe much better. |

I loved artpop ...but some people won't understand it. It is too artistic for them perhaps and not mainstream enough. It was catchy and eclectic ...and like BTW suffered from management over production ...she sounds like she is fighting that this time with PI ... and doing it her wrong way ...wrong or right in terms of mainstream appeal ...maybe she is embracing her own artistry and doesn't care ..but remains to have an eagle eye watching too. never a bad position to be in.

Artpop was not generic though, i cant imagine any other artist doing that album other than Gaga (or someone unheard of who is similar in eccentricness) infact my username comes from Aura

![]() ARTPOP is a pure pop album. Nothing more nothing less. There was nothing progressive about it. Other songs such as GUY and Sexxx Dreams are as generic as they come. I think Gypsy is probably the best song on the entire record. It wouldn't have been out this place on Born This Way. Edit. I forgot about Swine! that is probably the most artistic song Gaga has ever done if you want a true example. |

Generic, basic, boring. The only good thing is the slick production. Quote:
There are plenty of receipts from writers, producers and all kinds of other people who have talked about Beyonces creative input to her career. Here is one I literally just saw on Twitter before checking this thread again: https://twitter.com/formationwt/stat...46864821170176
There are similar anecdotes from industry people all over the place, as well as behind the scenes videos. You don't gain the enormous amount of respect she has from the majority of her industry peers by being a "puppet on a string". Quote:

I don't get some of the reasons on why some people are hating on this song. People keep comparing the song to Bad Romance and her early work as if she should go back to that sound but I guarantee that everyone would be 'bored of her' and would want her to do something different, which is what she is doing now. You've got to think of this as a new era, a more stripped back era.
Another reason is the repetitive lyrics but Poker Face had a repetitive chorus and is classed as her best work. It is true that there are a lot more lyrics in PF I'm not disputing that, but the scenario is the same. I personally think this is a great song, albeit not her best work and I'm not saying that it's bad at all I think it is very good and it's a song that gets in your head. I think with a few more listens, most of you would start to like it. (Please correct me if I'm wrong with anything that I've said aside from my opinion) |

Oh, the perfect delusion
![]() If I cared enough to actually do so I would source and post an entire thread's worth of evidence to the contrary. However, it would obviously be a waste of my time and not worth the effort just to prove a point. Nor would you read it. |

Also, Pokerface was a fun party/dance track whereas it seems like Perfect Illusion is intended to be taken more seriously, yet the lyrics don't really deliver. If 'stripped back' is what she's going for, then both her lyrics and vocals will need to be better than they are on this song. It's just not her best work, as you said. |

I've never bought any Gaga. I did LOVE Bad Romance & a couple from around that era, but the hype turns me away (as with most mainstream artists).
First time I heard the new single 'Perfect Illusion' I thought it meh. Now, its caught up on me & a really love it. Her voice in the verses sounds like shes trying to channel Bruce Springsteen (?!), it sounds quite compact & punchy. Theres defo a rock-ish vibe on the surface, but the production has probably been tweeked to oblivion! 8/10. |

I personally also don't take any notice of the music critics. Perez Hilton once claimed Gaga people were giving critics exclusive access to her in return for positive reviews of during The Fame Monster days and she never sued him for slander so it must have been true and I can well believe it being so. I think Gaga is a lot like Taylor Swift when it comes to media management over her image.
Music critics in my opinion are reliable judges of good quality music. That's what they're being paid to do for a living, so they must be pretty knowledgeable about it. |

![]() Seriously though, number 4 is pretty good considering she's been gone from music for a few years. |

She's discussed this before, They pitched up her vocals on The Fame to suit to fluffy productions. This was dropped after The Fame Monster.
I don't mind lower vocals if they are fuller, but I'm talking about the screaming and shrieking I hear on Perfect Illusion. It's a different style of singing which has nothing to do with the pitch of the vocals. |

It's a bit too harsh sounding for me. Her vocals are shouty and don't sound very good tbh. Shame because the production really is fantastic. There is a great song hiding in there somewhere but it hasn't been executed well. It's not a bad comeback by any means though. Catchy enough and attention grabbing definitely. She could've done a lot worse.

Okay, so the more I listen to this song, the more I'm LOVING it. I still stand by what I said earlier that it's a generic sounding song and not as good as Applause imo, but I'm really started to love it. Had it on repeat for the last couple of days!

Putting aside the fact you used Perez Hilton as a point of reference, do you really think the ARTPOP era would have happened if Gaga managed her image as scrupulously as Taylor Swift? Why would she pay for good reviews during her most commercially popular era, but then stop paying for good reviews during her "downfall"? That makes no sense.
Music critics in my opinion are reliable judges of good quality music. That's what they're being paid to do for a living, so they must be pretty knowledgeable about it. But I don't think you can blame critics if an album doesn't do well. Now anyone can go to youtube or one of the streaming services and listen to an album and make up their own mind whether they like it or not. They don't have to take a critic's word for it. So if Artpop didn't do well, I don't think it had anything to do with critics, but people listened to it and decided they didn't care for it and didn't want to buy it. |

So I've been listening to it for a few days on and off, and it's still terrible.

There's been some utter DROSS in the charts lately so I don't think it's TERRIBLE but it doesn't seem to go anywhere & at this crucial point in her career I don't think anything less than a killer tune would've done enough to salvage her precarious position

I feel people are extra critical on Gaga for some reason. I think from day one people want to see her fail, I'm not sure why, maybe it's the crazy outfits or something.
But with artists like Beyonce, Rihanna etc- they too have put out some crap stuff. Rihanna had a song this year (Sledgehammer) which had zero impact. Admittedly she had Work which was successful, but we all know deep down that song is utter cr ap and isn't exactly creative. |

well i have been listening to the song all week and can say it has definitely grown on me! which is what seems to happen with all Gaga's songs. i am not sure this will be a hit for her though, but i suppose we will have to wait till the videos out and the song gets playlisted on radio.
to be honest i am disappointed by alot of artists this past year, Britneys Glory album is pretty poo aside from a handful of songs, and 'make me' was just an awful choice of lead single. Beyonce's Lemonade whilst having done reasonably well has got really boring for me already, i still listen to her previous album before that and enjoy it far more. i am starting to think that music is just starting to become dull and uninspired all round
