It's Katya's first series. Ed is very much the underdog.

They probably need a bit of support

It is an interesting pairing and I'm hoping they at least turn in some good ballroom and some entertaining latin.

In the early stages at least, I really love the pairs that aren't the obvious contenders. Ed looks like he's going to work at it (more Vine than Myers) so it'll be interesting watching his progress.

Does anyone know about Katya's background?

(So many new professionals to get to know this time!!)

I'm the same Dervla

Katya is Russian. I have seen Neil and Katya dance a few times. Each time I've seen them their honour dance (that they reprise on winning) has been the jive which I believe is their favourite dance. Katya is the most successful female latin dancer currently on Strictly.

Titles include: British Open Professional Rising Star Champions, 2x British National Professional Latin Champions, 2x UK National Professional Champions, Runner Up World Professional Latin Show Dance Championships, UK Open Amateur Rising Star Latin Champions, 4x British National Amateur Latin Champions, 4x UK National Amateur Latin Champions, British Open Amateur Latin Champions, 2x International Amateur Latin Champions, 2x UK Open Amateur Latin Champions, European Amateur Latin Champions, 2x World Amateur Latin Champions.

I'm a half-hearted supporter of Ed but I like his humour and spiritedness thus far - 'I shall be wearing the maître d' look'

But I like Katya and hope she gets a few weeks in to show off her skills as a pro.

Roll on first show.

As much as I love seeing good dancing from week one I also like to see complete beginners (cos that's what a lot of us would be innit!? ) especially if they look as if they're going to be quite good fun and so I'm rooting for Ed and Katya. She's been thrown in the deep end a bit but we'll see what she's made of. I think he's approaching it in the right spirit ... he's going to get slated but hopefully he can stay in long enough to improve Good luck to them!

Good find!

They really do have to throw themselves into it at all hours... No wonder the contestants become close over the weeks. It's proper hard work and I guess they'd need people who understand

Yes, I guess it must become all consuming. The fear of having to perform must be some sort of spur. They can't easily back out now.

Here is a recent routine from Neil and Katya http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=uie80awv9KQ

Katya has also tweeted this picture and said that Ed has to stay like that the whole weekend.

(Sorry, I know how to post the photo but not the whole tweet.

Thank you. He comes across really well there.

I'm really glad I drank a lot of whisky, put a peg on my nose, and partially forgave him for not loving Jezza as much as he ought. It was the healthy thing to do. I'm going to enjoy this pair.

There's also a Claudia inteview in the S*n, which has been linked to in the News thread on the main forum. She talks about Ed in rather a nice way (amongst other things -- ageing, her daughter's accident, Tess). I'm too squeamish to re-link but I did read it

I'm sitting here with my mum. I'll have a read of the S** article, since she buys the S** (honest guv, not me ; I buy the Sunday Times, which has an interesting interview with Daisy Lowe, but I can't post a link to it in her appreciation thread because the Times set restrictions on their online articles; a bit disappointed to find out that Aljaz is a chain smoker though ).

Just read the S** article online since it was from earlier this week (today's edition just has a stuffed cat that has been made into a helicopter ). So the big revelation is............ It is Ed Balls that makes Clauida scream!

Very much liked this article and it's made me like the man a little more, if never the politician!

Ooooh. Some way to go. Quite a bit of Wallace and Gromit modelling going on there.........but at least Katya is teaching him properly.

I like what I see and think Katya is a good partner for him as she will respect him but be firm, which is what we see. I can't believe I'm rooting for Balls

Hello

Much to my surprise I find myself joining the Ed and Katya appreciation thread! I don't know much about Katya yet, but I've always had a soft spot for Ed.

Jeremy Vine has an interview with Ed in this week's Radio Times and has tweeted a photo of the article. Too small for me to read, but I thought the dress that Katya is wearing in the photo was very familiar....

.....and it is! Jo Clifton wore it for her tango with Giovanni at the Strictly Proms recently!

I can stretch the image on my ipad. Best bit is where he was asked if the newspaper reaction to his dancing hurt. He answers that you can't be too thin or thick skinned as a politician. 'If you're thin-skinned then you can't survive; but if you're thick-skinned you become inhuman and insensitive'. I wonder if that's what happened to TB, TW, JMcT etc? (All the letters. It's like an algebra.) But it's a clever pov. He calls it 'Goldilocks skin'. Just right.

Good spot with the dress! It is stunning. So is Katya. So is Jo...

Oh and Maggie, you'll like this bit. He's was losing his nerve on the red carpet launch thingy -- people in the audience started asking him if he was all right, and Janette came over to get him dancing. Re-parenting!!

Here's another Balls link http://www.theguardian.com/politics/...tly-appearance, which seems clipped from the Jeremy Vine interview

See what a positive soul can bring to the proceedings. Now that would have been an interesting pair although I think Katya will be better for him in terms of learning ballroom.

Not been around much recently as lots of things (good and bad) going on in my personal life. Hopefully settled down a bit now.

So Ed certainly seems to be a more sensitive soul than the likes of Tony Blair! (I assume TB is Blair and not the late Benn )

Seems like Katya is giving Ed a tough time . Or the press like to cast them in their respective roles: Out of condition, overweight Dad Dancer meets beautiful but tough Russian dancer. http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/s...-balls-8854593

Ps: Ed and Janette could have been fun, but I like the Ed/Katya dynamic.

Thanks for the link Ann. I hope things aren't too hard in your life right now.

Here's another Torygraph thingy, complete with torture device http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2016/0...ows-you-gotta/
