Ed has a charleston ...

According to another thread the jive is Neil and Katya's signature tune so may be Katya can help Ed with the speed of the charleston and some steps or moves they share as dances in the swing category. May be ...

The only good thing is that charleston is a memorable dance. If Ed performed another underwhelming standard routine then he'd definitely by bottom 2. It's possible he may hold off that position for another week or two with an entertaining charleston. I know he's a politician but I just can't picture him swivelling ...

Tameka is doing a Charleston. I think she will obviously be very extrovert and so interesting to see how they compare. The music sounds quite appropriate.

Yes, jive is Neil and Katya's honour dance usually (and honour dance is performed after a couple have been announced as winners of a competition and is usually the couple's favourite/best dance). It is certainly the dance that has made the most impact on me when I've seen them, and I'm not even an big jive fan.

Maybe they are building up Ed's fitness for it!

He certainly gave it everything, so I gave him one of my votes in return!

Voted for Ed! He was brilliant, so much fun and I'm impressed with Katya. Think they'll be safe.

In a parallel universe Ed is Chancellor of the Exchequer looking after the finances of the nation.

But would he be happy?

Thanks for confirming that he was on time. I thought he looked splendid. It was predictable that Craig would comment on the lack of swivel, as he always does and also it is a characteristic move in charleston. Nonetheless it was a stonking dance sans swivel. I think the pros have outside help with the charleston choreography and, from what I gather, choreography is tailored to suit the celeb. I worried a few times during the dance that Ed would have to stop as it was so high energy but he kept going. If he stays for a few more weeks - hopefully - he will lose loads of weight.

Katya was adorable in the dance. She was effusive and seemed so happy. She looked beautiful too. Ed is lucky to have been paired with her.

Great post. Apposite and pithy. In answer to your question, no he would not.

Hello Ochre, so glad you enjoyed their performance. Katya has become one of my favourite pros in the space of a few weeks. She seemed to happy tonight in performance and with Ed afterwards.

Well done to Ed! He gave it his all & that's what it is about. Excellent job by Katya. They deserve to go through to the next week.

Have to give Ed some appreciation tonight. He is slowly winning me over, which is something I thought I would never say! Love Katya too. She's quickly becoming my favourite female pro.

Ed did a great job and pleased the crowd, he had good pace and rhythm. So angry about Len & Bruno's sarcastic political comments, very inappropriate.

My "political" comment is that it's the first time in my life that I've voted Labour!

I'd like to see him stay long enough to make inroads into that corporation of his, too. I hate seeing anyone of a certain age - especially someone I like - carrying too much weight in the danger zone around the midriff. Come on, Ed - you're nearly 50 and if you don't shift it now it'll be an increasingly uphill battle (trust me)!

It's so refreshing to see a contestant like Ed - no experience whatsoever and with aptitude seemingly somewhat thin on the ground - applying himself with such determination and with such good humour.

Here's hoping he turns out to be John Sergeant Mk 2 and Houdini-like manages to avoid the dance off for many weeks to come.

Hi Fyoosh, it's been a real effort for me to swallow political grumbles (easier now the labour leader election's over) but I completely agree about the kind of contestant Ed can be.

It's a strange year. We've got a truly talented dancer (Will) who is more than happy to go the comedy route, and a beginner who is showing signs of resisting it...

I must say Ed is the one who has surprised me the most. He was terrible in the launch show, I think Katya has been working miracles! He has improved so much and you can see it, he's actually dancing and not just giving in to the 'I'm crap so I'll just stomp about and look daft' mindset.

Just the nature of the beast, I think - how else did he become one of the Bake Off glitterati and learn to play the piano sufficiently well to play to a radio audience of however many millons it was (well, quite a few, anyway). One of life's polymaths!

I don't care about his political manoeuvrings. I think he's a good bloke, and that's about as much as you can ask of a politician. As often as not, pragmatism has to rule the day - better that than the vanity of a Trump or, dare I say it, a Corbyn......

Runs off......

Corbz isn't vain! He's steadfast. He is the MacWhirr of British politics. Tony Benn's favourite MP, supported by the Beast of Bolsover... He's probably a bear of limited brain and he was not ready last year. His failings are plain but his heart is in the right place. IMO.

(I approve of pragmatism but loathe the way the whole middle ground of British politics has been taken over by the interests of big corporations. I'll take anyone who sees it and stands against it... And it's a proper fight because the mycelial strands are everywhere. 🍄👀

Having said that, Ed might have been a different politician if the political climate had been different. Neither he nor Ed Miliband seem to have had the game-changing drive to change the whole context as McDonnell and Corbyn have done -- Revolution!!! -- but I don't feel they're the bad guys. Brown neither. I have a soft spot for Gordon. Gawd knows why.

Blair OTOH... Terrible to bear his conscience. Truly terrible. I would not want it for all his millions)

Any hoo, I'm rather proud of swallowing my political Leftiness to support the beginner guy (which I would want to do). And I'm really loving the way Katya is taking the training so seriously. She's got to put pretty much everything in place... and she's doing it!

Well hello again! I rather thought from your cryptic comment on another thread that Ed Balls was anathema to you. Seems I was wrong.

Ed will not be John Sergeant in the sense that he's willing to work hard and slog it out. Also, Katya is no Kristina. She would not tolerate such nonsense! But yes, in terms of left-field (pardon the pun) popularity, I hope Ed snares it and remains a good while longer. I've watched their dance back many times today and him being where he should be and at pace each and every time is breathtaking! No wonder Katya was happy. She looked adorable with her hair up and deep red lipstick. I'd like Ed to do either a latin next week or a foxtrot AS.

And this is why he has my full support in this competition. He's determined to make a decent play for Strictly as a dance and popularity competition. Good on him for not being undermined by the comments he was receiving from Len and Bruno.

Not surprised at all. I didn't think for one second he'd be in the DO this week. He'll probably have Latin next, which will be interesting!
