The streaming era has changed what songs get high up the chart. I think there's no guarantee this year's winner will get to number one.

If anything it will be even harder just ask Louisa!

I can't see an XF winning song get streaming numbers, now, ever - those belong to Beiber and drake.

If it is to stand a chance they will have to pick a far better song than the one they lumbered poor Louisa with last year.

Isn't this a bit of a daft question considering last year's winner didn't make #1? Obviously there's no guarantee any more.

However, I suspect Syco will make sure the winner's single is a surefire hit this time, and perhaps shoot a proper music video (not the same old montage shit we have every year), and have it available immediately after the final. Etc.

I think it's pretty much the opposite.

Why would anyone want to stream Forever Young by Louisa Johnson?

Released at the height of the festive season when everyone is partying with loved ones and want to listen to happy party songs.

Forever Young just missed the mark 100% completely and really showed up SyCo. Ben Haenow sure was lucky to get that one week at #1 when iTunes sales were still relatively decent.

I don't think we'll ever see X Factor winners #1 with their winner's single ever again. They would have to broadcast the final on a Thursday night making the song available to download/stream from midnight on the Friday and if they still do CD singles have the track ready to be sold in the shops by Tuesday at the latest - and get the winner to do CD signings.

Hey? if The Neales could get a top 30 hit thanks to CD sales and no publicity, just think how many people would buy the X Factor's winner's single on CD if there was an incentive there (i.e. buy the single and get it signed by YOUR WINNER!!!).

Desperate times, desperate measures.

I think streaming coupled with the new music Friday thing has scuppered any chances of future x factor Xmas number ones, but this day has been overdue we've been dealt too many awful Xmas number ones due to x factor over the years

It depends. Even with streaming, most #1s this year have been less than 150k in chart sales. In the past (other than last year) the lowest #1 seems to have been Sam Bailey's song and she still got 150k. XF Winner's songs are normally strong in the pure sales department so a song could easily overcome any lack of streams. What doesnt help is releasing the song midweek since a chart week now runs Friday-Thursday.

On one hand, the likely lack of streams means that an XF song will need at least double the sales of any other song to get a #1. OTOH, the overall decline in sales makes that more likely.

It used to be a big deal that the winner got to number one. It was one of the reasons people disliked The X Factor cos the Xmas number one was guaranteed to be the X Factor winner. Simon Cowell must be desperate to make sure this year's winner does better than Louisa Johnson! Perhaps he can stream the song a million times. He's rich enough to create millions of Spotify accounts under different names.

Not just streaming, the charts now run Friday-Friday which makes it even harder when the winner's song doesn't come out until Sunday night, so is already three day of sales behind

Ben Haenow did it so I can't see why an X Factor act can't do it if they're actually interesting, can sing, and has a song that feels like it's not being used for a Funeral ceremony.

Really it's not streaming that will hold them back. If the winner sells enough downloads and CDs as an average X Factor winner, it doesn't matter if no one streams as they'll be far enough ahead on total sales. Louisa did badly last year because her sales weren't strong enough.

The charts were still compiled Sunday to Saturday in December 2014. The charts moved to a Friday in July 2015.

So any talent show since where the winner releases a single has ultimately failed completely. Even The Voice has struggled with the changes to moving the charts to a Friday.

Stevie McCrorie got to #6 in 2014 thanks to Scotland. Kevin from Liberty X got to #24 thanks to losing 3 days of sales by the time his single was released.

X Factor either need to have the live final on a Thursday night. Or scrap having a winner's single and just award them a record contract on the night and announce their debut single will be released in January. That might actually mean giving the winner a decent original song and time to film a proper music video. Build up its release on social media Justin Bieber style and then BANG!!! release the song, get people on Spotify streaming like crazy because SyCo have **gasp** released a brilliant song. #1 for one week.

Job done.

Really it's not streaming that will hold them back. If the winner sells enough downloads and CDs as an average X Factor winner, it doesn't matter if no one streams as they'll be far enough ahead on total sales. Louisa did badly last year because her winner's single was one of the most boring songs ever recorded and quite rightly hardly anyone bought it.
Fixed for you.
