Is there a new series of superhero comics I could start? I used to read a lot of Spider-Man and X-men when I was a teen but the continuity changed a lot of times and I'm lost. What's the best reboot recently?

Well, you might as well go with the latest Spider-Man reboot, we're only 13-14ish comics in. X-Men are in a right mess, I dropped all the X books on my pull list and have just been catching up on the Marvel Unlimited app - which I'd recommend, actually. Especially if you can grab a 30 day trial.

Or, just pick up some trade paperback collections - whole story arcs in one set - and see how you get on. In that case, to get an idea of the full Marvel Universe, start of with the most recent Secret Wars collection and work on from there. If it's Spidey you want, then I recommend Spider Island and then maybe Superior Spider-Man...

Beyond that, it's kind of difficult as both the main houses have been shaking up their properties a lot lately. Off the beaten track, Image Comics' Invincible is pretty good and can be picked up in trade from the start (they're 100+ comics into the series). Saga and American Vampire are also good but not really super hero based...

Now is a difficult time to get into comics if I'm honest, both main cpmanies have just had big shake-ups. However, if you're looking for something easy to get into and easy to follow, I'd say go back and look into the Ultimate Marvel line as well as DC's New 52.

I'da thought now would be a perfect time to get into DC, what with the bucket load of No1s having just come out.

The reason I don't think it's a good thing to get into it now is because they may be no.1's, but they aren't starting from scratch, it's connecting bits of the old continuity mixed with the new one. Unless you've done some back reading it would be pretty complicated to follow.

Yeah, DC is just a hot mess at the moment... To be fair, though, Marvel haven't gone back to any semblance of a clean slate with their recent No.1's but I just think they're the least complicated of the two. I agree with going back to the beginning of the Ultimate universe books, though. Ultimate Spider-Man, in particular, was excellent.

I started reading comics again a few years back and found Marvel impossible to get into, makes my head hurt, totally impregnable for new readers imo

The only Marvel I've been able to get into has been Punisher Max which has recently been re-released in huge volumes so that'd be a good one to get into right away

Batman would be another good one, you can pick up the main important stories in trade really easily and for the most part they're really great reads

Image are also very good, I'd recommend:

Invincible (two compendiums available and they’re great value for money)
Walking dead (three compendiums are available for this too)
Deadly Class
Saga

Plenty to be going on with there

Guess that just depends on how "up" on past happenings the OP wants to be. Sure, with Rebirth not being a restart, there will be some referring back to old New52 stories, but I still think a newbie can jump in with the Rebirth #1s and just ask here or at reddit/DC if ever they're confused about a reference.

If you're looking for something to read, and you're an old time Marvel fan, I would recommend doing what I did a few years ago, and that is taking out a Marvel Unlimited Sub and then starting the Ultimate Marvel Universe from scratch. Art is very good, writing is usually very good, stories are familiar, but with a twist....and it all comes to an end after about 700 books. In real terms it existed 2000-2015, about 6 books a month at its height, so it gives you a good idea of who the best creators were at that time. Many of them have gone onto greater things, like Robert Kirkman & the Walking Dead etc.

The other thing you could do with the Marvel Unlimited app is go back to Fantastic Four #1 in 1961 and start from scratch. I did, and am currently up to November 1982.

The Ultimate line is a great start, my personal favorites being Ultimate X-men and Ultimate Spider-Man. Both good twists on old origins and just altogether good stories.

I'll just note that there's currently a sale on INVINCIBLE comics and collections on Comixology...

I considered recommending the Ultimate line (although it lost its way towards the end) but part of me thinks, screw it, just jump in. It can be a bit confusing at first but you'll get into the swing of things soon enough.
