It was a very bold move to have this loud, vibrant family of brassy Slater sisters descend onto the show in the very same episode of original character and much-loved Ethel's funeral. They literally blocked her funeral with Charlie's cab! It was almost as if the writers were intentionally trying to provoke the viewer into disliking them from the start.
But they slowly integrated them into major storyline's around the Square at the time. They teased us with a feud between Pat and Mo (all roads lead to Pat Butcher!), they had them storm into the Jacksons to stop Jamie Mitchell battering seven shades out of Sonia... only to realise she was ''aavin' a baaaabee'', they had mousey Little Mo play a role in Frank and Pat's affair being exposed. Massive, classic storylines that people still remember today. If you watch the episode where Sonia gives birth, you can see a very subtle hint to the Kat/Zoe storyline. Everyone is outside the Jacksons as Sonia's leaving, Zoe criticises her for being so stupid to get knocked up at her age - cue a look of concern from Kat. It was such a small moment that viewers probably didn't even catch it. It's just something you notice in hindsight.
I think I preferred the hard-as-nails Big Mo of the early days. Much more interesting than the comedy character she would turn into. I liked that she was the one encouraging the sisters to dump Trevor's body after the iron whack. It was a dark side that should've been explored.
I think the family reached their peak in 2002 - when the Little Mo/Trevor storyline climaxed in a blazing house fire. Pretty much at the time when John Yorke (the EP who introduced them) left and Louise Berridge took over. January 2004 is the last time all 4 original Slater sisters appear together on-screen. The introduction of Stacey 10 months later begins Slater era 2.0...
Someone on here bumped up Stacey's first episode thread a few years back. Interesting to read all the hatred towards the character.
