While looking in the underrated songs of the 80's thread I was reminded of an old fav of mine so I found it on Youtube. In the 'related' section there was a cover version of it, now I'm not a fan of covers but if you're going to do it then do it a different way.

The Promise - When in Rome(original) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HI_xFQWiYU

The Promise - Sturgill Simpson(cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eWJmN8D820

One lifts me up the other back down again, see if you guess which.

Your challenge, to find other diametrically opposed cover versions.

easy!

neil diamond - solitary man (original) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irvRderExjk

HIM - solitary man (cover) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-05M6zK56c

the original is one of my all time very best favs ..... but i cannot knock the cover, its good!.

switch it now to this

HIM - join me in death (original) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V4AscLidWg

lightforce - join me (cover) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02MrsIQMnlY

think i just prefer the cover ...

I LOVE to hear my late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal sing "He'll Have To Go".

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. Go here for the original copy of the song which was done by late country singer Jim Reeves.

I've always preferred Ray Stevens sped up version of 'Misty' to the slower versions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d5Qpmwq4bE

although some of the slower versions do still appeal to me, especially when someone as classy as Ella Fitzgerald is singing

My only thought is why you don't tell us what song it is?
Most people have no possibility of playing YouTube videos on their phone, no need to keep the song a secret from us.

Maybe in your opinion and in the opinion of whoever decides to agree with you, but what I shared in this chat is still a legitimate contribution to it. We were asked about our favorite cover that is different from the original copy of the song and I love how my late beautiful precious covered the song that I tell about. How other people choose to view what I share in this chat or any other chat here that I choose to give my two pennies in is their own decision.

What is horrendous? The way that my late beautiful precious sings the song or are you referring to my mentioning him again?

God bless you two and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. Wow. When did being consistent in getting the word out about a favorite who is not that well known compared to other singers become such a terrifying thing to do?

its called overkill .... we all get the message, it does get a little tiresome though when every post you seem to make is about one artist. others exist you know!

Some songs are such classics that maybe they should never be covered. Nevertheless here are two efforts I'm quite fond of.

BIB: One of my favourite covers ever - it never fails to make me smile.

Here's another suggestion from me:

Constant Craving - KD Lang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXqPjx94YMg
Constant Craving - J2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTSMVvPvicA

You may "get the message" as you say here, but I believe that everyone else here can speak for themselves and one person here has already told me that they had never heard of my newest favorite until I started talking about him here and sadly where there is one person who doesn't know, there can always be other people who don't know too.

As for there being other singers out there, I am already well aware of that because I do have other favorites. I actually just left a message about one of my other favorite singers in the country music appreciation chat.

Is this some weird new take on Allahu Akbar?
Who is Allahu Akbar?

God bless you two and my other favorite singers always!!!

Mad World:

Tears for Fears' original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFsHSHE-iJQ
Michael Andrews and Gary Jules' cover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v52Igdotisk
In a similar vein:

Kate Bush's original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp43OdtAAkM
Track & Field's cover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN_67KMy9W0

As much as I like the original, the cover is just absolutely beautiful.
