EE - Phil and Ben - Gone on long enough.
6 years ago since this scene, Phil just goes around in circles in trying to accept his son for who he is,

Hmmmm. I hated the original "coming out" story. If you can call it a story. It was very badly done.
I was happy when DTC put Ben back in the closet so he could come out again with a proper storyline. Phil's reaction has been realistic. There are some people who never come to terms with it. Phil is a hardman who is ignorant of homosexuality, and although he has trouble with Ben's sexuality and pretty much avoids the issue, he does kind of (grudgingly) accept it and still loves his son. I think this is very fitting for his character. Some parents don't even go that far. Having said that, I do agree that it would be nice if Phil could finally be a little more accepting. Storylines and characters do have to progress eventually. But I've been enjoying Phil slowly coming to terms with something that flies in the face of everything about his character. |

I agree, no progression just the same scenes played out over and over again.

Phil and Ben are 2 of the best on the square. They make the show watchable.

Some people never accept their children's sexuality and I feel it is realistic that this is something they continually go over with Phil and Ben

There's been plenty of progression and development. I think deep down Phil has accepted Ben's sexuality and just as Phil has accepted who Ben I think Ben has done the same. I don't think he'll ever get open acceptance and he accepts that. However he knows in his own way his dad does accept him and Ben loves his dad for who he is and enough to want him around and to want to give him his liver,

I feel there has been progression, Phil is very stubborn and stuck in his ways and whilst he may not really like that his son is gay, he has at least partially accepted the fact he is.

Ben should've washed his hands of Phil years ago.
He's abusive and will never change for more than 5 minutes. |

Phil's refusal to completely accept it until now is realistic - and there still has been progression. He began to accept Paul as Ben's boyfriend before he died.
