I think exploring this side to her character was a great idea. Soaps can be far too PC these days, and Dot is a fictional character, so I think it was realistic for Dot, a religious woman, to express her views on the matter of gay marriage.

They did the same back when Todd came out on Corrie. Legends like Vera and Gail were very hostile towards Todd because of this. It told both sides of the story. As a gay guy myself, I find this great character development. People learn, people change. It was great to see Dot see some sense and attend the wedding tonight, but it was even nicer to see that they didn't forget the character of Dot and her strong beliefs. Well done EE.

Very believable and realistic. Dot's from a generation that doesn't understand gay marriages so it would be strange for her to suddenly accept it.

Thursday and Friday's episodes were saved by the pen of Daran Little and it's no surprise it took him to salvage something from the mess of Grunts return.

I am fed up of returning characters who don't really have the time to commit to the show (Although the EP shouldn't be cutting corners by getting people back who don't have the time) and then there are those (Paul Nicholas) who should never have been employed in the first time as he couldn't commit the time to being such an important character and therefore the result was a mess.

Lets concentrate on meaningful stories about characters that need development or could be progressed better and are on the show full time.

Spoiler

I hope SOC takes the time to properly look at the shows faults and fix the temporary fixes that DTC used which was just lazy production.

Thanks

Daran Little seems to write excellent character led Drama.

I believe Rob Gittins wrote Monday and Tuesday's episodes? I enjoyed Monday's, although Tuesday's was a bit of an anti-climax. Having said that, I have never been a massive fan of his episodes. It's surprising as he's been there the longest and since the 80's, but his episodes for me just don't deliver much.

I also agree with the returns. Unless full time, I just find them so pointless. I don't care if x is coming back for 4 episodes of y is coming back for 3. Yes it's realistic, but it's become tiring to watch. It waters characters down and the way they just suddenly disappear the next episode when situations haven't been resolved, is bitter.

I really liked it

It must of been tough for June Brown though to act that sort of thing out as she doesn't actually hold those views. She's a bit of a gay icon. Most of her male friends are gay, she works with the gay men's choir and has done loads of charity work with LGBT charities.

I loved it. More of this kind of character-driven EastEnders, please.

Agreed. I had tears in my eyes when she uttered the line "but you're my friend " and I also liked the scene with Johnny.

I thought Ross Kemp was brilliant aswell in the scenes with Courtney.

Two completely different characters but both were struggling. It was an excellent episode.

It was a great idea but I found the dialogue a tad basic. I guess they were trying to squeeze a lot into a short period of time. Would have been good to see some scenes of the marriage intercut with Paul's funeral.

Anyone who ever watched this show from the start would know that this is who Dot is! I've got bored with people thinking she's some sort of paragon of morality! She was brought in as a hypocrite: spouting the bible to other people but pretty unChristian in her views and actions.

Why would it have been tough? She's an actress. She was hardly beating him around the head with a lump hammer.

I thought it was good bringing Colin back, in that it made a nice parallel. While there is much more acceptance in the world today, there is still work that needs to be done. While Colin is celebrating love, Ben and Johnny are mourning a boy taken away by hatred. It, at first, seemed stupid bringing Colin back but it actually worked really well

Good idea but the execution was lacking for me. The dialogue felt it had been written by anti-homophobia campaign organisation or something. Just didn't feel natural at all. It was all just contrived.

I agree, overly contrived.

Barbara Windsor found it very tough when she had to act out scenes when she was bigoted towards Mark Fowler for having aids. Especially as she has raised money for charities.

So it's only natural and human to find some things hard to act out as an actress or actor.

I found the dialogue very simplistic and in keeping with the scenes and characters

Colins acknowledgement of dot and her struggles to throw off what the church says wasn't contrived imo. If he had lectured her about being a bigot then the argument could be made it was completely biased.
