So how do they fit Max and Lily in a box room? Or is it Sarah, Bethany and Harry . Our old house had a box room and barely had room for a single bed never mind a bunk bed for two kids and all of their stuff.
no idea, I think Gail referring to it as a box room was just saying she had the smaller room.

it was big enough for her and michael first time round so two kids would be no problem.

from the outside the house doesn't look like it has size issues

I've just been watching the episode where David pushes Gail down the stairs after finding out she'd help Tina through her abortion.

David's bedroom (at the time) was at the top of the stairs directly in front of you; the box room being to the left and I assume the third bedroom and bathroom to the right (off screen).

Although the houses weren't to scale over at Quay Street I remember seeing Gail Worth talking about the time they were in the garage with Richard and how the car (Vauxhall Zafira?) barely fit!
they made everything bigger when they moved to Salford

but its still tardis like!

I used to live in a terrace house that had 4 floors, the basement, ground floor which had living room and kitchen. 1st floor had a bedroom (size of the living room and huge) bathroom. loft was converted to a second bedroom. two of us lived in that house.

the terrace opp us, was 1 bed and the attic not converted a family moved in, we thought that must be a squeeze, then one of thems parent's arrived from overseas followed by brothers and sisters (I assume) at one point there was about 15 people living in the house!

a little while ago, I got talking to a dog walker, he lived in a two bed flat, him and his girlfriend and two dogs one of which was a german shepherd and not small! her parents came over from Poland and decided to stay but they couldnt afford anywhere bigger so 4 adults and two dogs in a pokey flat.

but that is life not everyone is popping out kids for benefits and then demanding that the council give them a bigger houst. if you cant afford more space you learn to utilise it best you can

I don't understand why Sarah, Bethany and Harry live there. Why not stay with Audrey in her 3 bed in Grassmere Drive? Surely the overcrowding, Sarah being recently released from a psych unit and a new baby being in the house means some housing benefit and welfare payments so Sarah can get her own place? The house isn't a Tardis and Max is too old to be sharing with Lily. How can Gail fit in the box room with Michael? Was Bethany staying with Nick? Four adults, a teenager, 2 kids and a newborn in a 3 bed with annexe is silly.

I wonder the same thing about Chesney's. Firstly it's Les's council house so how come he's still in it? It has two bedrooms - one for Chesney and Sinead and one for Kirk and Beth. Where does Craig sleep? The airing cupboard?
BIB - Not to mention only one bathroom

I've always wondered about No.5, because when the Battersby's lived there Nick and Leanne (when they got married in the 90s) had to sleep on the couch as there were only two bedrooms hence why they moved in with Ashley.

Gail has an en suite in her annexe which must be huge. It's got from snug for a Vauxhall Zafira to being big enough for a bedroom and bathroom. The Rovers got silly for a while too but that living room upstairs seems to have been forgotten about now.

Oh yeah I forgot about the ensuite, I think it's only a toilet though...the whole house is a tardis

Ah yes the rovers second living room, which made a couple of appearances in 08/09 and hasn't been seen since...

Chesneys house is the same as all the others on the Street, they have 3 bedrooms upstairs.

It's a two up two down and always was until Les left. When it was Ivy's it had two bedrooms and the Battersby girls had to share. Then like someone said earlier Leanne and Nick slept on the sofa. Ken's is two bedrooms upstairs and the front room became a third room. I think it's conveniently forgotten by the writers and suddenly rooms appear out of nowhere. At one point Chesney's (well Les and Janice's council house as in reality it would just go to Les' stepson) had loads of bedrooms - Chesney in one, Fiz in one with John and 'ope had her own nursery.

No they don't, the old terraced houses are two up, two down, always have been, apart from the ones that are knocked through, like Devs and Chesneys. Nowadays they just invent bedrooms that were never there before, just so that they can have all the characters living together on the Street.

They aren't. If you look at the pictures of the new set the platts is bigger. Don't know if they did that when doing the new set or if it was before.

If you google the new set, the daily mail had some good pics up in a story

Edit to add http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...-location.html

Not saying it has more bedroom but in terms of upstairs space it looks like it is bigger
Maybe they are large double rooms in fact I hope so but still Gail must have one of these to share with Michael so Sarah, Bethany and the baby share the other and Max and his sister share the smaller room That is over crowding by any standards. Why on earth can't Sarah afford rent Or at least couldn't she move in with her Gran or brother. She was living with Nick before wasn't she?

ETA They must have to have a rota for use of the front room and kitchen as they couldn't all fit in either of these spaces.

Dave should kick the lot of them out... Gail, Sarah, Bethany, Callum Jr... Even Max and Lily if they don't start paying their way.

Apparently (before my time) they were three beds in the terraces and an outside loo. The third bedroom was converted into a bathroom when they got indoor plumbing. I think Ken still has the outside loo in his yard. Bet that was cold on your bum on a morning.

Not Max, he spends every dime he earns for his medication.

When Corrie started in 1960, the only home with a fitted bathroom was the Rovers. All of the other houses had three bedrooms upstairs but as you've said, gradually converted the third room into a bathroom. By 1962 the Barlows had a bathroom upstairs but it wasn't until the early 70s that Elsie Tanner installed a bathroom at No.11 (it was pink and black!)

It's hard to believe that not long before I was born people had to go outside for a wee and had a bath in front of the fire. I'm from the north east so heard all the tin bath stories when I was little as there were miners in the family many years ago. The Barlows must have been posh then getting their inside plumbing done so early.

I'm from the north east too and sometimes find it hard to believe that even within my lifetime (and I was born in the 80s) some people still didn't have indoor bathrooms. There's an urban legend in my town that one old lady lived without running water until well into the 1990s

These are my estimations of when each house converted the third bedroom into a bathroom:

No.1 - unknown
No.3 - c.1962
No.5 - 1976
No.7 - collapsed in 1965, reconstructed in 1982.
No.9 - possibly 1965 by Ken and Val
No.11 - 1972/73
No.13 - 1963 (installed by Jerry and Myra Booth)

I don't think the bedrooms at that small. The house is near enough twice the size of the nazirs and sallys and has space over the garage.

But yes ppl do live like that. Not everyone lives in council houses and can just demand more space when they want
Yes, that's what happens in council houses. There are so many of them to go round you just get given a mansion as soon as you ask for it.

One of my friends had an ancient council house that still had a fully plumbed outside loo - this was the 90s. They used it for dog mess from the garden

It's the only room that makes sense. Maybe David has a small camp bed under the double bed he makes up for her.

He wouldn't let Max have to sleep with a toddler, not with his ADHD.

It wouldn't be fair to ask Sarah to look after both Harry and Lily through the night.

Gail would probably volunteer to share a room with Lily but I think David would prefer to be close to his daughter.
