Can anyone remember the "spontaneous" I know, let's make a boy band when they made One Direction? I'm wondering if they just took the lads and made it, or was there a selection and narrowing down from a few?
Basically I'm wondering if there's a "sixth member" who's living with nearly being a multimillionaire worldwide superstar, but instead works in ASDA?

I've always thought there was more to 1D than meets the eye. However, i always thought they were already a boyband possibly even managed by Simon Cowell and used X Factor to give them more airtime and focus for the public to "get to know them".

So no, i don't think there was ever a sixth member who missed out. All you need to do is watch Louis' butchering of Hey There Delilah at his live audition and wonder what on earth the judges were listening to for them to say "yes". Louis was already in the group before his butchering took place. He was always going through to the next round. He could've sang 4"33 and still got through.

Would also explain why Simon had the groups category in 2010. He pulled all the strings and I genuinely think Simon wanted 1D to win that series but a certain Matt Cardle ticked all the boxes of "female favourite" and did what Leon Jackson, Joe McElderry and Ben Haenow achieved - the overwhelming female vote.

I just think it was a stroke of luck. Cher Lloyd was the chosen one that year. 1D were obviously popular, but it wasn't until the show had finished that they actually became huge. I just think it was a case of right place right time and a lot of luck...especially for Louis who can't sing to save his life.

Would have been preferable.

They were chosen beforehand. Cowell had decided to make a boy bland and give them maximum exposure.

Even Zayn's "I can't dance" sketch was done primarily for airtime.

Matt Beige-Cardigan was always going to be the winner as the MOR white male with guitar appeals to the largest section of viewers. Hence, James Bloke from 2012, Thingy Haenow from 2014 & Samey McSameGuy from 2016.

Cowell just wanted the boy group in the final for exposure before he could launch the mass marketing campaign. Surprised he didn't have them do a duet with Wonder Dog.

I'm not sure all 5 members were pre-selected. Surely Simon knew Liam would be coming back and would probably be another unsuccessful bland solo boys winner if he got through. He also knew about Harry (the other one with a big audition segment and interview from Dermot). Combine that with the fact that JLS were doing great commercially and the show really wanted a group to win and there you go.

They probably instructed their production team to be extra aggressive in finding and letting through potential boyband members, and then they were very lax themselves at the auditions. But I don't know that they had settled on Niall/Louis as 4th/5th members by the time of the auditions. I mean, if you were Simon would you have clung to Louis if Matt Terry had decided to audition that year instead?

By the way, you didn't ask, but Little Mix was by contrast very clearly unplanned. Basically zero audition screentime between the 4 of them. After the first manufactured girl groups that year failed to click, Kelly Rowland lined all the rejected girls up on stage and had them sing together in different groups. She picked the unit she liked the most. We didn't see it but she confirmed that's how it happened in an interview a year or two later.

Louis has claimed in interviews he had some involvement in putting together the group, he said something about helping Simon out.

I do think the show/Simon wanted a successful boyband, but I don't think the members were planned before the show went out. They probably had an idea that Harry/Liam would be featured heavily hence why they were so heavily featured at the audition process, and the whole Zayn-can't-dance thing was suspicious at the time. I say that I don't think they were pre-planned because I don't buy the idea that the show would put together a group of "rejected" contestants with the absolute plan of launching them into a worldwide career. It's not a great start for an act - I think it's more likely that the show wanted a boyband, none of the current acts in the groups quite cut it, so they went about trying to cut and paste one themselves from the boys category, and threw Liam and Harry in there to give them a bit of credibility. As Nissl says above, contrast that with Little Mix whose only airtime prior to them being formed was one of them in a quick montage during the audition stage, there was clearly a thought process with 1D although I don't think as much as there was with Stereo Kicks, who were plan A of their year.

there was a boy with them who went to judges houses as solo (while they were initially rejected as solo at bootcamp before forming the band) and he didn't get through, and yes probably works for asda now

They had already put together other boybands and girlbands that didn't work so well. It was more about filling a slot on the show. The first time it happened it was Louis Walsh's idea
