Is it just my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S6 running the latest and updated Android 6.0.1, or is anyone else finding that the BBC iPlayer Radio App version 2.10.3.8071 won't start if the phone is not on line - once started it doesn't car if online or not to playback saved programmes

I'm not sure if this started after the last Android update or the last iPlayer update.

Looks like it's due to an app update as several other users are reporting the same problem on the Play store.

I'm guessing it might be connected with the recent changes which mean you must have a TV Licence to watch/listen to the iPlayer. While it cannot confirm you have a TV Licence, perhaps they are tightening up the current checks and ensuring the device you are using is UK based whenever watching/listening to content, even after that content has already been downloaded.

By 'online' do you mean connected to wi-fi?

This is some (possibly not very helpful) current advice from the BBC:

BBC iPlayer Radio - Does not launch on Android Nougat

Some users experience that the BBC iPlayer Radio app is crashing on launch after installing Android Nougat.

To fix this please go the Google Play Store and download the latest upgrade of the BBC iPlayer Radio app to ensure you have the Android Nougat compatible version of the app.

Pretty sure the OP means that internet access (by whatever means) is required to start the app.

The OP's device is running on Android Marshmallow.

I am connected to the UK via VPN on my devices so it accepts the allocated IP addresses which none of them are from my home wifi router that has been supplied to me by my ISP. Suggests that anybody from abroad can listen to BBC iplayer radio app if they are connected to the UK via a VPN.

It suggests that anybody from abroad can listen to stations on BBC iplayer radio app if they are connected to the UK via a VPN.

Yeah, VPNs can be used to circumvent these location restrictions. I occasionally use one on my laptop browser when a YouTube video is not available for UK users.
