When I, an enthusiastic licence fee payer, invest in BBC content/talent I expect loyalty from that talent and the content to remain on the BBC.
You have a uniquely flag-waving attitude towards the BBC, though, Ash, as has been observed here on more than one occasion.

I never forgive any talent when they 'switch sides'.
Except when the talent switches sides TO the BBC, which you seem to find perfectly acceptable and not any kind of problem whatsoever.

Did IQs drop sharply while I was away?

They haven't quit. If you really believe Mel and Sue have quit Bake Off, then I've got some magic beans to sell you...

Oh, wake up and smell what they're shovelling! BBC have LOST Bake Off. Doesn't matter what they think. C4 will have promised them a lot of money to pretend they've quit.
I don't quite get what you're saying? If Mel and Sue HAVEN'T quit Bake Off, you're either implying this is a publicity stunt and they'll "change their minds" with another press release further down the line, or that they were pushed for some reason.

If this is a publicity stunt, the backlash against Mel and Sue when they "return" would be unreal. I don't understand why they, or Channel 4, would want to damage their reputation with fake promises and then going back on what they've told the public.

And I think you're deluded if you think C4 have actively pushed Mel and Sue to quit, let alone paid them to quit. If anything, they'll have offered them large salaries to stay. I'm of course not saying there isn't a comfy counter-offer by the BBC to keep them (their own chat show etc) but the last thing Channel 4 will have wanted to do is change ANYTHING about what makes the show so popular - which includes, in a big way, the presenters and the judges. The more people who leave the show, the more the negative backlash towards Channel 4. Now that the presenters have left, they'll be desperate to negotiate with the judges to keep face.

Well since my IQ has so sharply dropped please explain why C4 would pay them to pretend they've quit - remind me to save these posts for the next series of bake off

Channel 4 have lost a huge amount of goodwill. It would have been a massive PR coup to have retained Mel and Sue and announced today that they were coming to Channel 4. It would have been more likely that the other presenters would stay. As it is now, people are saying the show is dead, and taking the P*** out of them, because it seems they have spent £25 mill on a marquee in a field.

Amongst who? 99% of viewers will be perfectly happy to just press the '4' button to watch GBBO instead of the '1' button, it'll make not one ounce of difference to them.

I'd read twitter - although they may still tune in, people don't seem to be over the moon

I'd be willing to bet that an enormous chunk of the BBC One audience doesn't even know what Twitter IS, let alone uses it to voice their opinions.

Are you saying that Bake Off on C4 will be getting 1% less viewing figures than it gets now? With new presenters and possibly new judges. Really?

That doesnt mean a huge amount of people aren't happy about it, its been trending almost non stop since the initial announcement with a huge negative response. And just because people aren't tweeting it doesn't mean they dont have an opinion it.

Besides like I said, people will probably still tune in

Well, it depends. Are you saying that people were turning on only to watch The Mel and Sue and Mary and Paul show - in which case the BBC could just give them all a different series and lose not a single viewer - or is it likely that actually a fair amount of people were tuning in for the baking and all the artificial "tension" which everything on television has to have these days in case people turn over or fall asleep?

NO-ONE HAS QUIT! FFS!

Why would they quit? Sue Perkins won't have been happy that they cancelled her sitcom after one series, so why would she care what the BBC think?

And I will say again, it depends. We don't know.

Almost certainly GBBO would get a slightly lower rating on C4 purely because there are plenty of people who just turn on the television, it comes up on BBC1 and that is as far as they go. Several times as many people will watch the same show on BBC1 compared to if that same show was on BBC2. (GBBO, The Weakest Link, Have I Got News For You, etc.) So obviously that will have the largest effect before you even get started. How much of an effect - we don't know. It depends.

There is no 'Well it depends' if it will not make 'not one ounce of difference to 99% of viewers'

Surely if they were pretending to quit, they would'nt have made digs at the whole going with channel 4 for the money?

Are you drunk or maybe the heats got to you.
I Suppose Len Goodman isn't really leaving SCD nor is Chris Evans leaving Top Gear. Infact come to think of it, maybe Clarkson, Hammond and May haven't either.

They've left the show and I along with everyone else on this forum and social media accept that they have, weirdly you can't

I don't think he's the one who needs to wake up. Mel and Sue have quit. They have chosen to leave. They made a public announcement saying they were "saddened" that Bake Off was moving and that they were "not going with the dough". If you think Channel 4 have paid them to have a dig at them and do a miraculous 180 later in the year, you're deluded.

Or, to use a phrase you'll understand clearly:

THEY HAVE QUIT! FFS!

Yeah, because C4 would happily spend £25m without ensuring they had anyone on board...

How many of those magic beans would you like? I'm doing them for a pound each or six for £6.
