Could the BBC have a baking show Mary, Paul, Mel and Sue - just with a slightly different format and obviously a new name and theme song?

I think majority of the current audience would watch a baking show with those four on it.

How has this been "allowed" to happen? One of their flagship shows and they let it go! Unbelievable.

Channel 4 will ruin the programme. Not least because C4 is controlled by Jay Hunt and she only cares about attracting the lowest common denominator in terms of viewers.
As someone else said though it's the fault of the production company, I'm pretty confident the BBC would have offered a sizeable offer but you have to remember we pay for it, they have been critised many times for paying big bucks for shows or people.

The production company have only looked at the short term, this could have remained a hit on the BBC for the next 10 years.

I don't even watch the show but acknowledge this is pretty huge, it's like being aware of a future car crash it won't end well

Be interesting to see if the four presenters, who swore they'd never do it on any other channel, really do have principles when they're doubtless offered more money to stay with the show.

While I don't agree with the move, I think some people on here need to calm down with hyperbole.

If they do produce shows like this (which I doubt) you'll obviously be forced to watch them...

Dont think Mel and Sue have doen much with C4 after their Light Lunch / Late lunch got binned in the late '90's

Never sure what happened, but Light Lunch seemed to be going great guns - then moved to a later slot where it pretty much tanked.

they would have to be very careful about infringing copyrights

i dont get why there has been so much criticism of the BBC in this thread. they took a punt on a show that probably no-one expected to do anywhere near as well as it has and i doubt the show would be worth anywhere near what it is if it hadn't been for the platform the BBC gave it.

You do realise you're in the Digital Spy Broadcasting forum, where the BBC can do no right?

As I've never watched Bake Off your sarcastic tone is somewhat misplaced. Channel 4 will kill this though building fake drama around the ad breaks and then spinning off countless tacky specials.

Well, the BBC took the leap to commission it in the first place, but surely the increasing exposure they gave to the show - ultimately by moving it to prime-time BBC1 - was purely a logical decision made in response to the impressive and continually growing ratings?

The format and the ratings made GBBO the success it is, the BBC just went along with the tide.

I think it's the fact they're going to jump straight in with a celebrity version that rings the alarm bells the most.

And so is the Channel 4 one.

Unless, for some bizarre reason, you think "Stand Up to Cancer" isn't a charity?

I just keep hearing the Channel 4 promo with "Toast of London"

"All I see is poor people and men with no legs"

If Memory serves me, way back when Bake Off first started didn't they offer it to Four and they passed- It seems so incredibly harsh on the Beeb and might be a mistake long term. Why would they ever commission anything from them again knowing that if its a hit it will be sold to the highest bidder- Utterly gobsmacking, but Channel 4 must have paid a fortune for it- The Estimate was approximately £700,000 an episode, that's more than Strictly and The Voice were combined-Insane numbers but then I guess a unique show deserves a unique story

Do we expect the rest of series to remain in its 8pm slot on BBC1, or will it get shunted around the schedules now

I can't imagine the BBC will be that vindictive.

If you've just lost a 10 million-rating show but you've still got episodes of it left, you may as well get 10 million out of those by keeping them in the place they'll get it.

Great British Bake Off: Channel 4 to broadcast show as BBC loses rights

http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-ra...y_to_clipboard

Yes confirmed as channel 4.

I think they will make a much better job of it than ITV or Channel 5 so that's a bit of a relief in a mini way!
How do you know? Love Productions would still be making it on either channel. And both will have four ad breaks, if not more on Ch4.

Would never work on Netflix. Sky would be the best chance of it remaining totally unchanged (i.e. Ad free) but they probably couldn't deliver the audience for the "brand".

It sounds like Love want to really milk the "brand" so I expect it to burn out brightly but quickly over on C4.
I don't understand why people keep writing that it would be protected on Sky?

Much smaller audience and would become a niche show.

I hate to think what Channel 4 will do with it, again they will lose most of the audience.

I'm trying to think of who they could get to present and judge it if the current lot don't want to make the move

Sarah Millican looks like she enjoys her cakes and biscuits

Very unlikely though Channel 4 will be happy if they can get a million or even slightly more.
