Mary Berry has just announced that she will not be following Bake Off to Channel 4.

Quote:
“"My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one. I am just sad for the audience who may not be ready for change, I hope they understand my decision.”

Well done Mary, integrity and loyalty, Love Productions have sold C4 an empty tent and some hired ovens.

Both fan-assisted though.

Hang on, I'm coming with you!

Is it fair to say the BBC nurtured the show? Wasn't it Love who came up with the concept? Or would the Beeb have tweaked it a lot?

BBC News feed:

Paul Hollywood has signed a three year deal with Channel 4 for Bake Off.

That's not going to go down well on here...

But to be honest, I'm quite pleased. As a fan of the show, I want Bake Off to continue to be a success on Channel 4 and I think having Paul Hollywood on board will contribute greatly to that.

Whoever he has as fellow judge will probably be male (Jamie Oliver, James Martin, Tim Lovejoy?) so it will be the battle of the egos.

Why will his fellow judge "probably" be male?

He's going to care what people say on a forum?

He (obviously) meant the reaction of some of the people who frequent this forum, especially those who are willing the show to fail for no other reason than the fact it'll be on a different channel.

I thought he would sign. Its a shame but I can't say I blame him. For him it's not so much a question of walkngn away from a show but possibly more one of having to walk away from broadcasting (not to mention the money))

Mel and Sue will almost certainly be asked to front other shows for the BBC and are not limited ot baking or even cookery. Mary Berry too could be employed elsewhere at the BBC. And at her age just doing endorsments, putting her name to books and merchandise would give a nice income.

Paul is a bit more niche. I guess he could do general cookery broadcasting but his USP is that of the UK's highest profile baker. So without a baking show he could be fairly redundant.

Although I must say I have always thought he was the most replaceable element of the format and presenting team

You miss the point entirely. All C4 have now is a brand name. A bit like "Heinz". But without an item to stick the brand name on. It has nothing to do with willing the show to fail. It has everything to do with what the show is "NOW" and that is Bake-Off.

Imagine Coronation Street moving to California with an American cast. Would that still be Coronation Street?

I've read the threads

I've never watched the show so I have no idea what the show "WAS".

However, as established a few times now, nobody here knows what the show "WILL BE"

BBC News suggested that no new series will air until 2018. Does this suggest the BBC will be implementing their time delay clause? If so, good on them. Means they can launch a new baking show next year with relative ease.

Seems to be " accepted" by all that us the case.

Maybe Love Productions can negotiate with the BBC to get it on air sooner for a fee?

Yes we do. It will be a different GBBO because the key elements of GBBO will be absent. That is the point.

You're wrong. The DS experts have spoken, which means the show WILL:

*Be presented by Alan Carr and Davina McCall
*Having flashing lights, dramatic music and viewer voting
*Have product placement in every single shot
*Have adverts every 10 seconds

I don't think I've missed anything.

So you have nothing to comment on.

Yeah - its a bit bittersweet really.

On the one hand, fair play to Mary, Mel & Sue for having their principles, but on the other, I think the show will miss them. It just all kind of works with the four of them, and the chemistry will be difficult to recreate.

So what if the show had stayed on the BBC and Mary Berry (being 81) decided to retire, with Mel and Sue seeing that as their opportunity to call it a day as well?

Impossible to recreate.
