Why is this sad little show taking up space on BBC news at 10?
Amazes me how dumbed down TV audiences have become.

Uproar on Twitter as the BBC News revealed the winner as one of the main headlines at Ten, ruining it for those who were planning to watch on catchup.

An emotional watch? It's a show about baking.

I have to agree. I watched tonight quite willing to be convinced what all the hype is about. I am none the wiser.

I expected some witty repartee from Mel and Sue - was there any? It seemed like they didn't have much to do or say. Mary Berry was pretty likeable, Paul Hollywood not so much.

How does a cooking programme even work on tv, when viewers can't taste, smell or touch what is being made? At least on X Factor you can hear if the song is any good, or on Strictly see if they can dance.

Given that Bake Off is the biggest show on the box... given it is leaving the Beeb ...and it was only during the last two minutes...

Was it the main headline or was it the last "and finally..." piece for a couple of mins.? As it was the latter, does it really matter?

(That's two alliterations in two threads )

It will be like one of those "Tours" with a sixties or Seventies band - where you only have the drummer and bass player from the original lineup.

They might own the name but it's not the same.

Sugababes cough...cough...

Yes it matters, it typifies the pseudo reality trash that blights the UK broadcasting landscape.

The show isn't ending. You might have missed the announcement, but it's moving to Channel 4.

Rather than have viewers get bored so the producers get "innovative" and ruin it.

Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Yes Minister / Prime Minister all ended before they got stale”

There was no sign of that happening, it could have continued for many years on BBC.

I think they will be pleased if they get much over one million viewers.

I was out tonight to manage to watch my recording without having already seen the result. Why should there be a news embargo for a day, week, month .. because some people missed the live programme.

By the way Nadiya won last year, just in case you had not heard.

The show as liked by many millions has ended for now. A show will continue on Channel 4 with presumably the same name and only one of the regular participants. It will be shorter because of adverts, probably have sponsorship and, being Channel 4, be changed in many ways. It has ended.

And you know this how?

Of course it will have sponsorship. Like thousands of other programmes on TV.

It's probably one of the most watched programmes on British TV (if not the most watched non sport).

If it even got 10 million viewers it would be on a par with some of the most popular TV shows in the US (The Walking Dead got just under 11 million and was the top rated cable show).

It's huge in terms of entertainment news.

Yes, but these people put 100% into making some food.
It was probably their life's ambition to get on this show and win it by baking a lovely cake and pleasing judges.

They know that, they're just being drama queens.

Because there is a huge buzz around the show for many reasons. It becomes entertainment news. The same happens with other TV shows. Soap operas, for example, sometimes make the entertainment news when story lines become a big hit or hit a social conscience nerve. Nowt to do with 'dumbing down'

I wonder if the BBC News will report on the next winner, if only to take a dig at the viewing figures?

I thought there were two Christmas specials to be shown on BBC1 and Junior Bake Off is about to start on the BBC so not quite the end. And viewers will have to wait two years for the C4 version by which time it will be long forgotten.

Why have you ignored the whole post to take the final sentence out of context?

As the poster this comment is in reply to said, in its current guise, with Mel & Sue presenting and Mary & Paul judging and being broadcast on the BBC it has ended.

The programme name and Paul Hollywood have moved to C4 however it very much remains to be seen if they can get anywhere near the BBC version that has proved so popular.

It's been on TV since 2010, so I doubt it would be anyone's life's ambition. Well, on Junior Bake Off I suppose, for those nine and under.....

It is the most watched show on television and the series winner has been announced, so it is bound to be a news item, especially on the channel it is broadcast on. The X-Factor winner would be a news item on ITV news.

But then why come to a thread about a television programme you obviously don't like to make such a pointless comment in the first place?

Some people seem to have far too much time on their hands.

Some people just seem to want to be killjoys of other people's pleasure.
We cannot like the same things - I loathe many things that are on TV so don't watch them. I would not criticise others' preferences or what they watch

It would be a sad old world if we all liked the same things.

I have enjoyed GBBO over the last 4 years only and will definitely not be following it to Channel 4 - I love the charm and gentle wit of Mel and Sue, not bothered about Mr Hollywood (he could be easily replaced) and think that the format has run out of ideas now so it would die a slow death in any case.
