They will believe him, eventually. At first they'll take their dad's side, for sure.

James has become so much better recently, what with his backstory being explored properly.

I still think it will be that Mac is homophobic and he realised pretty soon that James was a "Mummy's Boy" and just decided he should beat him into "becoming a man"

It is strange they didn't talk about their brother James and not wondering where he is. Either way when they learn Mac been been beating up James they won't want anything to do with him.

I get a feeling it's going to come out soon that James isn't Mac's son, hence his resentment towards him.

Isn't it rather strange that none of them seemed concerned that their Dad had clearly hit somebody again? Would you not wonder who it was? But no, they just faff about doing a fake wedding for Alfie and Jade.
Don't get me wrong, what is happening to Jade and Alfie is dreadful, of course they'd want to do their best to comfort them and cheer then up. But they seemed utterly unconcerned that their father had beaten somebody up. Re James, i think it has just always been this way within their memory - their Dad and James don't get on so they don't query him being absent from family events. Also, James seems like he could well be a good 10 years older than Nathan and ellie who i'd guess are both mid twenties. So he'd probably have left home for university not long after their proper memories start so he's just not been there most of the time and they're used to it that way. It is amazing how much abuse can stay hidden within a family home, not just sexual but physical as well. I can believe that Marnie and the others didn't/don't know though Marnie might have suspected. I'm sure she knows that James takes the blame for her acts, that it is her fault Mac thinks so little of James, but probably not what form the dislike and punishment has taken. Re Jade not dying because it is too dark - HO do have characters die on dark storylines and of course Dawn died of Cancer many years ago so there is a precedent. I actually think that them working with "stand Up to Cancer" might make it more likely that one of them will die as although they'll want to promote hope and the power of positive thinking, not to mention getting anything suspicious checked quickly and taking all treatment offered. I think they will also want to get across that sometimes there is nothing that can be done which is why it is so important to keep raising money so they can fund Research to find cures so that less and less people die in the future. |

I think James is Mac's son - he's just not the kind of son that he wanted and i don't think that is necessarily the homosexuality.
Also, sadly, some people can't cope with becoming 'second best' to their spouse after a child is born. They resent the fact that this little person becomes the centre of their Mothers world (i'll say it is that way round but can of course happen the other way as well) - that they are no longer N+ 1. Generally the reaction to that is to go and have an affair, but sometimes it can turn into hatred for the child that came along and ruined your life. That seemed to be what James believes happened though of course, that is probably just his reasoning - he could be wrong. Also, an abused child staying quiet because it some warped way it makes them feel 'special' to receive that attention from their parent isn't that unusual either. |

You're right, I never considered the age gap and memories of the younger Nightingale's, of course, sadly abuse can be hidden, and in this case it definitely has. Yeah, Dawn died, and Steph was terminal even if they severely messed up her death with that horrific ending. I never thought of your 'SUtC' angle, and Jade dying to create a powerful message would work, I hope she doesn't, but it would be very brave of the show to go down that,l route. |

Thanks for the info DJ
It's great they are bringing back back old characters. ![]() It is, Kirkwood has always said he's a fan of Jude (and Davinia who plays her) and it's great that she's finally agreed to return
