A Young Carer storyline?

Has a soap ever done a young carer storyline?

I watched a documentary on Youtube a few nights ago "Age 12 and looking after the family"

It was really sad to watch.

Have any of the major soaps ever covered this issue?

They covered it briefly with the young Stacey and her mum Jean. You got a real taste of how her life had been growing up with her mentally ill and promiscuous mother. How she went to school scruffy, smelly and hungry and the teachers turned a blind eye. It was pretty heartbreaking stuff. I imagine that today's young people would get a lot more support.

I did forget about that with Stacey.

I think it would be good to have an actual on-screen story.

The documentary I watched was heartbreaking and the parents were refusing to get help, so their 9 and 12 year old daughters were taking care of 4 very young kids (all aged around 1-6) plus taking care of the house, and the parents. It was too much for them.

Hollyoaks did it years ago with Ricky, whos dad had MS. It was during one of Hollyoaks' transition periods so it just kinda dissappeared

I became a carer at 16, that's 27 years ago and still am. I wasn't as young as the carers you are talking about, but a long running story could be made interesting, however, a great deal of it is simply about love for the you are caring for.

I've got deep personal experience in this field. When I was younger I cared about alcohol and chasing skirt. It's been tough at times.

Thanks for listening.
