I don't think it was homophobia. It's because James was sensitive and close to his mum. Mac saw that as a weakness and exploited it.

I am disappointed that James featured so little and I am not sure if I want to see a revenge storyline like this, especially when it's very hard to tell what James is planning and his plan could include hurting his siblings.
